I had to share some very exciting news with you!
One of the most important women's history sites in Boston is now a City Landmark and it's on its way to an even higher designation.
Thanks to the patience and tenacity of my colleague and friend Lynn Hyde, after THREE YEARS, she got it done! If you've been through this kind of process, you know what that takes.
The site is 15 West Street, Boston (it runs between Tremont and Washington Streets). It was...:
* The home of the famous "Peabody Sisters," Elizabeth, Mary, and Sophia
* Where Elizabeth Peabody owned and operated a foreign language book store
* Where she also became the first woman publisher in Boston
* Where, while it was her home, she founded the first kindergarten in America, on Beacon Hill
* Where Margaret Fuller held her "Conversations" that truly fueled the women's rights movement
* Where Sophia married a young writer named Nathaniel Hawthorne (heavy sigh)
* Where Mary no doubt entertained Horace Mann, whom she married, the "Father of Public Education"
The list goes on....Point being? The site will be preserved and treated well.
Congratulations to Lynn, and to everyone who supported her valiant effort.
We won big-time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a real victory for women's history, and an example of passionate leadership at its best.
Lynn, if you were local, I'd give you the biggest hug I possibly could.
Be well, and be in touch!
