Greetings!
Moving into a new office does have its challenges, but it can also bring a whole lot of clarity. Just as Henry David Thoreau realized when he went to "live deliberately" at Walden Pond in Concord, moving does provide the opportunity to clear out, prioritize, and focus. (It also makes me long for the day when everything is cordless!) My new office in beautiful Ipswich, Massachusetts, has many more windows with which to tempt me outdoors, especially now that everything is starting to bud and poke up out of the ground. But at the same time, I'm embarking on many new projects, including the Anne Bradstreet 400th (see below), and new products, starting with my step-by-step book on exactly how to "do" your business history. Stay tuned for that! What is endlessly clear to me, even more so now, is that we all need to think about and act on history differently. There's so much benefit to be had, not to mention fun. Check out my client's story below, and I am DELIGHTED that you, dear reader, are joining me on this journey! Wherever you are, I hope you have sunshine as we do here today in Ipswich!
Be well, and be in touch!

Bonnie

How a 17th-Century Poet Can Help Your Business
 | | When you support Anne Bradstreet's 400th, you will attract people to you! |
by Bonnie Hurd Smith
The poet Anne Bradstreet turns 400 years old in 2012. You can get in early and be a hero all at the same time - a hero for your business or organization, for your community, and for Anne. How? Anne Dudley Bradstreet has a huge following, and interest in her will only grow during her 400th. A native of England, Anne arrived with the Arbella fleet in 1630, whose most famous passenger was John Winthrop, the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Anne lived in Boston, "Newtowne" (today, Cambridge), Ipswich, and Andover, Massachusetts. In addition, because the Arbella fleet first moored off the coast of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, and first disembarked at Salem, just to the south, those communities "claim her" as well. From there, the colonists sailed south to Charlestown, before settling in Boston, the famous "city upon a hill" that John Winthrop described in a speech delivered on board the flag ship of the fleet. Those communities also have a stake in Anne Bradstreet, especially Boston as the state capital. Who was Anne Bradstreet? (Continued here!) |
A Financial Adviser takes History into His Own Hands
 | | Kids learned history hands-on, and no one got hurt! |
by Bonnie Hurd Smith
A client of mine just did something wonderful. This is someone who is quite devoted to his community, to its history, and to the education of young people. He has been involved with the local historical society as a board member, board president, and consultant despite their disappointing ability to think big, act entrepreneurially, and do the kind of history education that could really impact young people. And so, my client took matters into his own hands! (Read the story here!)
