Connections
Greetings!

Ideas for new clients for you in five minutes - tailored to your business? Yes! I promise you that after asking some pointed questions I can come up with ideas that will get you in front of new audiences in ways that will impress and persuade - all by using history.

Personalized plans are the best route, based on your business, community, and personal interests, but I offer three (well, actually four) ideas below that any business can use!

And speaking of history...during this Valentine's Week (yes, why not a week?) I wanted to give you a special gift for sheer enjoyment. It's the script of the talk I just gave on Valentine's Day for the Beverly (MA) Public Library, and I was urged to publish it. It's titled "Judith Sargent and John Murray: A Timeless Love Story" - and I think you'll agree that it IS timeless!

I hope you are still feeling energized by the new year, and please be in touch about my promise of fresh ideas in five minutes!

Be well, and be in touch!

P.S. If you're looking for ways to attract women customers, consider women's history! March is National Women's History Month, so that's a great excuse to sponsor a talk, host a program, or offer a special. However, EVERY month is Women's History Month in my book. Let's brainstorm!

What ideas can we come up with for you in five minutes?
by Bonnie Hurd Smith

"Give me 5 minutes and I'll have you thinking differently about history!"

That's what I say to people now when they ask me what I do, because as with any service business it's all about the client. What can I do for THEM? How can history help THEM achieve business goals, and what are THEIR goals?

The three key business goals people

usually cite are:

1)   getting more customers or clients

2)   developing customer loyalty

3)   boosting their business's reputation

Naturally, I ask about the business, its history and community, and the interests of the owner because there are always ways to match these things up with something historical to achieve the business goals listed above. But for the purposes of this article, and for the general business reader (you), let's look at Number 1 - using history to get more customers or clients. How? Let me give you three ideas any business could use.

First, for a very modest investment, you could contact your local historical society or public library and ask if you can sponsor their monthly lecture series. Most historical societies and libraries have some such monthly program - or they want to, and you can help them set it up! (continued)

Judith Sargent & John Murray:
A Timeless Love Story
by Bonnie Hurd Smith

Some of you have heard of these two people - certainly anyone who knows me has! Some of you may know about their careers - his as a Universalist preacher and the man who really organized American Universalism, and hers as the foremost female essayist of her day and an early advocate for women's rights.

But even for people who do know these basic facts about John Murray and Judith Sargent, they do not know their love story - and it's one that deserves to be told!

First encounter

We have no way of knowing what actually happened when Judith and John first met on an early November day in 1774 in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

John Murray was 33 years old. He had been promoting the concepts of universal salvation and dismantling the dark and gloomy promises of Calvinism throughout the colonies as an itinerant preacher for almost four years. He was from England, a protégé of James Relly (who is considered the founder of Universalism), and a widower who had lost his young wife and infant son. He was someone who considered himself a failure to God because he had fallen into debt and even spent time in debtor's prison. He felt unworthy to preach, which he had started doing as a young man under John Wesley and George Whitefield, and he had banished himself to America to live out his last days - only to rediscover and reclaim his calling as a preacher. Do you have a question about how history can benefit your business? I would love to hear it, and I would love to answer it!

I might even feature your business or organization here, because others could benefit from the information!

If you're a nonprofit, you are also a business. Ask away! And if you're a historical nonprofit, do you have questions about how what we do can provide you with new revenue streams?

Please be in touch with your question!
