Greetings!

I've been thinking a lot about environment these days, having recently moved my office. Every business coach will tell you that one's environment - the physical place and the people you surround yourself with - profoundly impact your creativity, energy, and intellect - your entire mindset, really. Yours and your team's.

What would your business environment look like if "history" were an integral part of who you were and what you did? Imagine the results with me in Article 1!

As a historian, I often think about women in history who have always had to "make do" without a "room of one's own," to quote Virginia Woolf, even when they were writing, painting, organizing, planning, or struggling for freedom. In many cases, the houses these women lived in where they created and worked for change still stand, and wouldn't it be smart for realtors to tease out these stories as a way to help sell houses? I think so! More thoughts below.

Our environment here in the Boston area these days is "challenging" to say the least with all of this snow. Bostonians have a long tradition of saying, "Well, we'll pay for it," whenever we have GOOD weather and we did have perfect weekends all summer and fall. Is this payback?

But, somehow, we always get through it!

Be well, and be in touch!

How Telling the Story of a House
Can Help You Sell that House
by Bonnie Hurd Smith

I recently met a very talented woman who stages houses for realtors to help them sell houses - especially "problem houses."

We all know how effective it is to have attractive furniture, plants, the occasional work of art and even something yummy cooking on the stove to create an appealing potential new home for a buyer.

But I also think that with old houses, being able to tell the story of the house as you walk through could also have an impact. You need a historian/researcher to be sure, but then you then need to be able to tell the story.

I am not talking about architecture, although you should know that too, I am talking about the personal stories - how people used the rooms.

Was there a 17th century "kitchen" or "hall" where the family did everything from cooking and eating to making soap, sewing, spinning, reading, and sometimes even sleeping? Was there an 18th century family parlor, and a more formal parlor for entertaining? Were there 19th century "upstairs and downstairs" and what do you know about the lives of both classes of residents?

Were there celebrations in the house? Special visitors? Tragedies? Joys? Births? Deaths? Was something important accomplished in the house?

I might even feature your business or organization here, because others could benefit from the information!

If you're a nonprofit, you are also a business. Ask away! And if you're a historical nonprofit, do you have questions about how what we do can provide you with new revenue streams?
