Act Now to Save Walking, Bicycling, and Safe Routes to School Funding in California!

Network Member Profile: Los Angeles Walks

Los Angeles Walks hosted its first community meeting in July-filling a local cafe with more than 40 participants. Community participants discussed strategies to make Los Angeles a safer, more accessible, and fun place to walk, while always keeping equity at the forefront of the conversation. Many themes emerged from the conversation and will help to set Los Angeles Walks' agenda going forward.

Building off this positive momentum, Los Angeles Walks will be hosting a design charrette for the Silver Lake neighborhood on August 25, 10 AM-1 PM. Please join Los Angeles Walks as it makes great strides toward making LA streets safer and more enjoyable.

New Resources
This new resource from the Cal WALKS Network contains talking points and facts that can be used as aids in gathering community, organizational or political support. Each of us may find that the messages and facts presented here are in full alignment with our work or that this resource is a starting place to define messages and strategy-a starting point from which we, as pedestrian advocates, can build, moving forward in creating a safer, healthier, and more accessible pedestrian friendly California.

The Tri-State Transportation Campaign has made it easier than ever to track down how each state is spending its transportation dollars.
A new report from the Transportation Research Board (TRB) features a synthesis of documented regulatory, administrative, and financial tools used by communities to build safe pedestrian environments. The report consists of a literature review, as well as interviews with key staff in local agencies that have implemented pedestrian-friendly policies and practices.

A new article in the American Journal of Public Health examines "public health burdens of mobility disability, with a particular focus on leading public health interventions to enhance walking and driving, and the challenges and opportunities for public health action," and proposes new strategies for research, practice, and policies to enhance safe mobility for aging adults.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released the latest data on pedestrian fatalities across the country. Despite a decreasing trend for overall traffic crash fatalities, the proportion of pedestrian fatalities is is actually increasing. From 2009 to 2010 alone, there was an increase of 4% in pedestrian fatalities. The report also indicates that California remains among the deadliest states for pedestrians-along with Texas and Florida-with pedestrians accounting for 22.1% of all traffic fatalities.
This infographic from Planning Magazine succinctly breaks down the costs of pedestrian fatalities and makes the case for cost-effective environmental changes that can save lives and save money.
