 POLICY, RESEARCH & REPORTS

Not Yet Complete Streets:
CA Highway Design Manual Update does not yet help pedestrians safely cross urban, suburban arterial or  rural main street state highways:
Called a Complete Streets Update, it helps pedestrians walk along sidewalks but falls very short in safe crossings for pedestrians, transit, bicyclists and motor vehicles at state highway interfaces with local streets at signalized, unsignalized and T intersections. Wide shoulder widths next to curbs (sidewalk and median),  restrictions on curb extensions and missing design standard for intersections and pedestrian safety islands produce unsafe, illustrations for proposed. Go to http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/oppd/drafthdm/index.htm for further info. (It is recommended that the files included on their website be opened in order from top to bottom). Send Comments to Caltrans and to  California WALKS
