Despite the widening pool of social channels online, many B2B marketers are reluctant to jump into the market with both feet. "There are still a tremendous amount of B2B companies that have not embraced social media, but not because they don't buy into it," said Jeffrey Cohen, manager of social strategy at Salesforce Radian6. "It's because they don't know how to get started; they don't know how to resource it and don't understand how they can set up a team to create content."

When Jonathan McGrew, senior marketing associate at Crawford Technologies, joined BMA Colorado in 2011 the chapter was just starting to ramp up its Young Professionals Committee. "The board not only set aside money to promote [the committee], but agreed to put a focus on the importance of younger B2B professionals as the future of the BMA," said McGrew, 27, who is Co-Chair of the committee. "Last year was new beginnings."

At the 2012 International BMA Conference, Motorola Solutions CEO Greg Brown spoke about the importance of marketing within the overall performance and success of an organization. Companies that are looking at marketing leadership as more than just a functional department - but as advisors who have a place at the table when key decisions are being made - are changing the overall narrative of B2B marketing and communications.

Pearson: Holding appeal to prospects who 'lurk and learn'

Bob Pearson is president of marketing agency W20 Group and author of "Pre-Commerce: How Companies and Customers are Transforming Business Together" (John Wiley & Sons). Pearson, who developed the social media strategy at Dell, said that so-called "influencers" are a key ingredient in B2B marketers' ability to cultivate new communities online and wed social marketing to the top and bottom lines. He shared some pointers about the dramatic changes that influencers continue to spark in the B2B marketing arena.

BY THE NUMBERS

Forty-four percent of B2B companies plan to increase their marketing budgets in 2013, according to a new survey by Sagefrog Marketing Group. That's up 4%, compared with 2012. The online survey garnered 160 respondents, representing such as Professional & Business Services and Technology. Half of the respondents said they expect their marketing budgets to remain the same next year, while 6% said they plan to decrease their marketing budgets in 2013. The top three areas of marketing spending are digital channels: websites, email marketing and online marketing.
