OSHA's Focus on Fall Prevention

Fall SafetyOSHA's fall prevention campaign was developed in partnership with the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and NIOSH's National Occupational Research Agenda program. OSHA and NIOSH will work with trade associations, labor unions, employers, universities, community and faith-based organizations, and consulates to provide employers and workers - especially vulnerable, low-literacy workers - with education and training on common-sense fall prevention equipment and strategies that save lives.

OSHA has created a new fall prevention web page with detailed information in English and Spanish on fall protection standards at http://www.osha.gov/stopfalls.

NIOSH and NORA also have created a page on the Centers for Disease Control website at http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/construction/stopfalls.html, as well as a joint website on fall prevention at http://www.stopconstructionfalls.com, which will be maintained by the Center for Construction Research and Training, that contains information from industry, nonprofit and academic sources.

The Value of an LCMS: Part 3

We are living in the Information Age. Most colleges, many high schools, and even some elementary schools are now relying heavily on eBooks and iPads. More and more utility companies are doing so as well. Why? Well, in an age of information, instant access to it is essential. The central insight of the learning organization movement was encapsulated by Arie de Geus, formerly of Shell Oil and author of The Living Company (Harvard Business School Press, 1997), who observed, "In the future, an organization's ability to learn faster than its competitors may be its only sustainable competitive advantage." Not only was he correct, but the time that he foresaw has arrived.

As your partner in the industry, ENERGY worldnet, Inc.'s Learning and Content Management System (LCMS) gives you a number of options when it comes to the type of training that you want to utilize for your workforce. We provide several hundred Computer-Based Trainings (CBTs), Written Evaluations (WEs) of knowledge, and Performance Evaluations (PEs) for Operator Qualifications (OQ), more than half of which are also available in Spanish. Our standardized training is fully customizable, meaning that pipeline and utility companies can make it specific to their unique needs by editing it as little or as much as they would like in our user-friendly system. Moreover, you can even create courses and evaluations from scratch. Truly, the sky is the limit.

Furthermore, ENERGY worldnet, Inc. has by far the best Records Management system in the industry. The final rule for OQ "sets record keeping requirements that operators must follow to successfully demonstrate compliance, and the information that must be maintained on each person who has been evaluated and deemed qualified to work on a pipeline facility" (DOT/PHMSA). In light of this, ENERGY worldnet, Inc. used the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) Form 14 OQ Inspection Form as a blueprint when designing our Records Management system, so that it can be used for compliance with all nine of the protocols for DOT/PHMSA audits. Our clients can easily maintain all of their OQ program records in the same system that they use to train and qualify their employees. A qualification "trail" is automatically recorded any time a knowledge or performance evaluation is administered. Clients can easily manage their Covered Task list (including requalification intervals and span-of-control limitations) and even record evaluations and qualifications from any number of sources, not just those that are done through ENERGY worldnet, Inc. Employee suspensions, Iinvestigations, event scheduling tools and a whole suite of customized reports are only a few clicks away. In addition, the EWN system provides a quick view OQ Dashboard, automated evaluation expiration notifications and email event reminders. In other words, the ENERGY worldnet, Inc. LCMS and Records Management database isn't just the best in the industry, it's also the most user-friendly too!

July 25, 1543 - Oil reported in New World

The first documented report of oil in the New World is made near the Sabine River on the Texas coast - when a storm forces two of Spanish explorer Don Luis de Moscoso's seven brigantines ashore.

After a discouraging expedition in East Texas, de Moscoso, who succeeded expedition leader Hernando de Soto, built the seven small vessels and sailed down the Mississippi, according to the Houston Geological Society. After reaching the Gulf of Mexico, the Spaniards decided to sail west along the coast. The storm hit and drove two brigantines ashore.

July 27, 1918 - Launch of First Concrete Oil Tanker

America's first concrete vessel designed to carry oil, the Socony, is launched at its shipyard on Flushing Bay, New York. The reinforced concrete barge is 98-feet long with a 32-foot beam. Built for the Standard Oil Company of New York, the ship draws nine feet with a cargo of 370 tons.

"Bulk oil is carried in six center and two wing compartments, which have been oil-proofed by a special process," explains the journal Cement and Engineering News. "Eight-inch cast iron pipe lines lead to each compartment and the oil pump is located on a concrete pump room aft."

Steel shortages during World War Two will lead to the construction of larger concrete oil tankers.

July 28, 1924 - Oil Scouts form Association

The National Oil Scouts Association of America - today the International Oil Scouts Association - files its charter in Austin, Texas, bringing new standards to an important oilfield profession.

The well is completed at the Northeastern edge of Burkburnett, founded in 1907 - and named by President Theodore Roosevelt, who two years earlier hunted wolf along the Red River with rancher Burk Burnett.

July 29, 1957 - Eisenhower begins Import Quotas

As America's reliance on foreign oil continues to grow and discourage domestic production, President Dwight Eisenhower inaugurates a Voluntary Oil Import Program, including import quotas by region.
