Industry Tip of Month:
Pipeline Inspection Gauge "PIG"

A pipeline inspection gauge or "PIG" is a tool sent down an oil or gas pipeline and launched by the pressure of the product in the pipeline itself. The four main uses of a PIG are:

  1. physical separation between different liquids being transported in pipelines;
  2. internal cleaning of pipelines;
  3. inspection of the condition of pipeline walls (also known as an Inline Inspection (ILI) tool);
  4. capturing and recording geometric information relating to pipelines (e.g. size, position).

The very first pigs were used around the year 1870. They were made from straw wrapped in wire used for cleaning. Straw wrapped in wire was also used. Later, bundles of leather were used in place of the rags. Since leather swells when wet, it created a tight seal. As the pig traveled down the line, it made a squealing noise that sounds like a pig squealing. The term pipeline inspection gauge was coined later. The pictures below are samples of different PIG styles.
