The Winning Team
The Texas Rangers finally made it to the World Series against the San Francisco Giants. Regardless of the outcome, for many fans, their presence is a victory in itself. For my late step-father, it would have been the perfect World Series match-up; one where his team would win, no matter what.
Frank was a die-hard baseball fan who loved both the Giants and the Rangers even when their own mothers would not have. He was a San Francisco native, and a first generation American born son of immigrants, who established his own roots in Texas as a college professor and an advocate for hundreds of students. Frank was a Giants fan by birth and a Rangers fan by choice. Now his two teams face off in the World Series. What a wonderful win-win situation.
In this newsletter, I am pleased to introduce you to Missouri Gas Energy, Metropolitan Community College and a group of folks that are creating new opportunities for individuals and our industry through a unique Gas Utility Technician Program. As a teacher and a mentor, Frank would agree this is another great win-win situation.
Go Team!!!

MISSOURI GAS ENERGY
Gas Utility Technician Training Program
With up to 55 percent of skilled gas utility workers eligible for retirement within the next 10 years*, locating and training qualified replacement workers is a high priority for utilities nation-wide. To address this anticipated shortage, the Metropolitan Community College, Continuing Professional Education (MCC-CPE) and Missouri Gas Energy (MGE) in Kansas City, Missouri have teamed up to create the Gas Utility Technician training program. Prospective students possessing basic math and English skills along with a strong desire to become a gas utility worker can enroll on a first-come, first-served basis. Classes are small and can fill quickly. The fast paced, four-week course covers many areas of gas field work, such as: Properties of Natural Gas, Personal Protective Equipment, Meter Loop Construction, Establishment of Gas Service, Leak Investigation & Classification, Carbon Monoxide Investigation, PE Fusion & Electrofusion, Tapping & Stopping, Backhoe Operation, Excavation & Shoring and Operation of Truck Mounted Air & Hydraulic Tools. This unique and innovative training program takes place at MGE's Field Operations Training Center in Independence, Missouri. Live natural gas is employed under controlled conditions along with training props pressurized with air to give the students a realistic training experience, while always under the watchful eyes of MGE's experienced trainers.
With fully qualified gas utility workers earning an average of $28.08 per hour*, the friendly competition among Gas Utility Technician students to be the best can be intense. Gas Utility Technician students who successfully complete the program have the opportunity to apply for employment with area gas utilities and contractors. Some former students now work at MGE while other students have found employment elsewhere.

The Safety and Integrity of a Pipeline |
With recent tragedies such as the San Bruno natural gas explosion, many Americans and the media have been questioning the safety and integrity of the 2 million miles of transmission and distribution pipeline running across the United States.According to PHMSA, 5,988 incidents were reported from 2000-2009. Of those, there were 587 injuries and 164 fatalities. What is often left out of media reports is that recent U.S. Department of Transportation data also shows that pipelines are the safest way to transport large quantities of energy products over long distances, and that significant incidents have declined by over 30 percent from 1998 - 2008. Ultimately the Operator and/or Owner of the transmission or distribution pipeline is 100 percent responsible for maintaining the safety and integrity of the pipeline. For this reason, routine operation and maintenance activities, including inspection for corrosion, pipeline coating, dents, gouges, leaks, or any other type of internal or external anomaly is extremely important. ENERGY worldnet, Inc. provides resources through its training courses and evaluations to help Operators and/or Contractors to be in compliance with Federal Regulations and Standards. We strive to offer the best training material to help you perform each task in a safe and efficient manner. Safety is the number one priority and together we can help protect employees, the public, and our pipeline systems. We express our sincere and heartfelt condolences to those who lost family members and friends in the tragedy that occurred in San Bruno, California. |
Create an OQC Report |
Are you having trouble generating an OQC Report? You want to create and archive an employee's Operator Qualification Compliance (OQC) Report so you go to Reports, Compliance Reports, and then to Create OQC Report. However, when you try to select the individual, their name is either grayed out or not displayed, so you are unable to choose the desired person. Why is this so? In order to create an OQC Report the individual must be completely qualified. Once the individual has met all of the task requirements, his or her name will appear in black and you will be able to generate an OQC Report. If the individuals name appears in a light grey color (see image below) or their name is not displayed at all, it means that the individual has either not been assigned to the task or is not completely qualified and will need to finish taking any evaluations he or she lacks in order to meet the task requirements. To check the status on non-qualified tasks, use the Task Status Report and/or the Evaluation Status Report. As always, if at any time you need assistance or have any questions, please do not hesitate to give us a call. We will be more than happy to help! |
