Soquel High coaching legend Dewey Tompkins 81, dies

Dewey Tompkins

Santa Cruz County lost a high school football legend, March 30, 2010

Former Soquel High football coach Dewey Tompkins died, he was 81.
Tompkins was a competitor, on and off the field.

Former Players described him as a driven coach who demanded perfection.  But he also liked to cut loose.
"He loved parties, everything fun.  He was always in a good mood, laughing and smiling,"  said his son Brad, one of four Tompkins children.

The passionate leader coached high school footbal for 35 years, including his final 32 seasons at Soquel.  His prized team at Soquel went 9-0 in 1977 - it remains the Knights' only unbeaten football team in the school's 47-year history.

Tompkins won 13 league titles with the Knights before retiring in 1993 with a career record of 203-125-7, a .606 win percentage.  His teams won the Central Coast Section playoffs six times.

He was father of four and met his beloved wife Betty, in 1955.  His football coaching career is a legend and the impact he made on the players lives was evident at his memorial on April 10, 2010 at the Dewey Tompkins Football Field @ Soquel High.  Players shared about a tough coach who worked them hard-expected sacrifice, committment, and a win.   However, when grown men share they will never forget Coach--you understand this man left a gift of confidence, cherished memories of teammates and a pride to be part of a legacy for him and them!
Thanks, Coach!

  Quotes:
So many memories of Dewey!! He taught Therese, Robin and me to drive...all at the same time. What a mistake that turned out to be -- so he said!  I heard that he discussed us during every driver's ed class from then on.   No friends driving together!!!   Sure loved that man - he had a lot of great character!  Miss you Dewey...on to bigger and better places!

Yes, I remember him taking our class down to Moss Landing, and I was driving and he told me if I could go across the parking lot which was full of holes without him spilling his coffee that I would pass drivers training.  I did it and had to drive the rest of the way back to SC, good memories.

Funny I was telling someone the other day after reading of his passing about drivers ed he told me to turn the car off and I turned the key to start and there was a terrible grinding noise.  He just leaned his head on the roof of the car and shook it back and forth while saying "Dutton" in a somewhat calm resigned voice. He was great; always a smile, always patient with us driving. rip

I remember cutting his swim class once. Me and AJ got changed and went out to the pool for roll call and when he turned his back  we legged it back into the changing rooms.

WAS A GREAT GOLF TOURNAMENT!!

Golf Tournament 2010

Tom Johnson, Bill McDermott and  Bob Lee

Thanks, all for such a great golf tournament! And to all who helped, golfed, cooked and hungout for a spectacular day of golf which captivated us into double overtime at the bar until we ended up with left overs at the barbeque.  Special thanks to Golf Sponsors:  GOLD:  RaeAnne Pifferini and The Brownie Baker; SILVER:  The Fidiam Family;  BRONZE:  Steve Edwards, New Venture Support Inc. and thank you to all loyal donars.

Many thanks also go out to the parent, student and community volunteers who gave their valuable time to help in the success of the day. A special thanks to Juli McDermott for organizing the event.

Central Firefighters rescue ducklings that fell into storm drain/Soquel High Alum's!!

Brad Spencer

Aptos - A small flock of ducklings was rescued by Central firefighters Monday morning, after they fell through a storm grate on Soquel Drive near Porter Gulch Road.   A Mother duck walking her baby ducklings became frantic when they fell through the storm grate around 8 a.m.  Passersby heard the loud quacking of the mother duck on top of the grate, and the "cheeps" of the ducklings below.  Central firefighters climbed down the grate and used a milk crate to bring the ducklings back to the road.  " We heard what sounded like a duck in distress," said Mike DeMars, Central Fire spokesman.  "Mom was circling the area.  We took the crate over to some bushes and let them loose where they were reunited."  Part of the "Hero" crew were alum:  Brad Spencer 02', Richard McDonald 96' and Doug Burklo 78'.

 DONATIONS NEEDED!!

There is a tremendous need for donations to the Soquel High Fund.
A good education for these students will mean so much to ours as well as their futures.   These students will be running our government and our society one day.  We need to give  the very best opportunity we can to each and every one of the students.   If you can give even a small amount it would help. Just simply go to http://soquelhighfund.org/home, it will make a difference.
