Are you Ready for an Emergency?
King County Launches Regional Smart911 Service
You may have seen this on our Facebook page already. As a former Registered Nurse, Melissa Irons our office manager is always looking for ways to help our company, staff and clients stay healthy and be prepared in an emergency.
On September 11, 2012 King County launched a program in conjunction with Smart911 which will:
- Help emergency callers and 911 respondents to have the necessary information you may not have handy in an emergent situation
- Smart911 is a voluntary personal database where citizens can enter personal, health, and safety information which could be crucial in an emergency
- With this new tool even when your cell phone GPS doesn't work, they will have the caller's address
- You can also include other pertinent information such as: work address, school addresses, children's names, photos, allergy and medical information
King County anticipates this to be an effective tool to help emergency personnel and officers get to the right people at the right time and know the right information. It is a great resource and will help us build a safer community.

Not all Contractors are Created Equal!
Here are some helpful Consumer Tips to use when screening potential contractors for home improvement or remodeling needs:
-
Always check their State Labor & Industries report. -
Check their standing with the Better Business Bureau. -
If your home was built before 1978, before beginning work, contractors must provide owners, tenants, and child-care facilities with a copy of EPA's lead hazard information pamphlet, Renovate Right: Important Lead Hazard Information for Families, Child Care Providers, and Schools (PDF), and must document compliance with this requirement -
Check with the EPA
to ensure your contractor is certified as a Lead Renovator and registered as a Certified Firm. -
Ask for references, testimonials, and/or client replies from their prior clients. -
Check their experience and knowledge base, reliability, and credibility to ensure they are prepared to handle your project. -
Ensure they have a network of resources to assist you with the needs of your project. -
Select a professional remodeler with experience in your project. Remember, lowest price does not ensure a successful remodeling project. -
Ensure that your job meets or exceeds applicable building codes and regulations -

Back To School Conservation Tips: |
- Turn off the lights - remind your kids to switch it off when leaving the bathroom and any unoccupied room at home or at school.
- Clean it up - teach your kids to pick up any trash they find on the playground and not to spit out their gum.
- School supplies - instruct your children to use the back side of the notebook paper. They can also reuse last year's chalk and art supplies that are in good condition.
- Carpool - walk if you are close. If you are without bus service or too far to walk, start a carpooling program with other parents in the neighborhood.
- Pack a lunch - help your child pack their lunch and consider using lunch pails or bags. Also use safe reusable plastic or glass containers for food.
- Recycle at school - if you have already taught your child to recycle at home, recycling at school should be easy. But not all districts have recycling. Check out your school's program.
- Keep children in touch with Nature. Encourage your child to spend 1-2 hours per day after school outside before homework time to avoid the TV.
Lastly, remember to spread the word. Encourage your children to talk about their environmental consciousness and pass it along to their friends and teachers. It's contagious.
Have a great school year! |

Have you Hired a Professional?
What is a Contractor? From time to time we find it helpful to educate our clients and all consumers about who is and who is not defined as a "Contractor" and "General Contractor" in the State of Washington.
What is required by Law?
In Washington, all contractors who perform work or who advertise or submit bids in this state must be registered with the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I), post a bond and carry general liability insurance coverage.
In a very simple definition from the Revised Code of Washington, (RCW 18.27.010) a "Contractor" includes any person, firm, corporation, or entity who, in the pursuit of an independent business undertakes and/or submits a bid to, construct, alter, repair, add to, subtract from, improve, develop, move, wreck, or demolish any building, highway, road, railroad, excavation or other structure, project, development, or improvement attached to real estate.
This can include any size project, from installation of carpeting or other floor covering, to the installation or repair of roofing or siding, tree removal services, or cabinet installation.
It also applies to anyone or any company who employs members of more than one trade upon a single job or project or under a single building permit. "Contractor" also includes a consultant acting as a general contractor.
By the RCW's definition, a "General Contractor" is a contractor whose business operations require the use of more than one building trade or craft upon a single job or project or under a single building permit. A general contractor also includes one who superintends, or consults on, in whole or in part, work falling within the definition of a contractor.

Why is it important to know this?
If you hire a person, company, or entity that is operating as either a "Contractor" and/or "General Contractor" but is NOT registered in the State of Washington you and your home or business are undertaking a huge risk and potential liability. If un-registered, you the property owner will assume the liability for any injury, accident, or damages that occur on your property during the work. As well as any other potential problems that arise.
Only businesses that provide services such as gutter cleaning, pruning, lawn care or window washing do not need to be registered.
