The Donkey in The Well
Author Unknown
One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway, so it just wasn't worth it to try to retrieve the donkey.
He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well.

At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quieted down.
A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off!
Now, what does this story have to do with commitment? I assert each of us has been like this donkey at some point in time - facing a goal that seems difficult if not impossible. Then life starts serving up dirt to test our commitment to that goal.
What the donkey exhibited was an unwavering commitment to get out of the well. Here's the evidence:
Commitment shows up in ACTION! No matter how many shovels of dirt hit that donkey, he shook them off and took another step up to attain his goal of freedom!
Commitment shows up in our moment to moment choices over time! That donkey could have gotten tired and given up in his quest for freedom, but he never did - he continued to choose to shake off adversity and step up again and again.
Results never LIE! Results are always the evidence of our commitment - where we spend our time, energy and resources. It is clear the donkey was committed to freedom based on his results.
What are you committed to today? How do you know? Look at your results - they are like a 'neon sign' pointing the way to what you are truly committed to.
