I had the opportunity to attend The Women's Conference in California last week, and let me tell you it was an experience not to miss. There were over 10,000 women and many men there being inspired and all left with the distinct message - "It's Time!" This was the theme for the conference, declaring that it is time to take action on any and all areas of your life in which you might be waiting. Waiting for the right moment, certainty, the stars lining up, someone other than yourself giving you the go ahead, a sign that the change coming is your "green light" to go for it. What I know about change is it is constant, it's coming whether we like it or not, so why not embrace it, learn from it, grasp it, and get into the driver's seat of your life whether it is personally or professionally.
Maria Shriver, the First Lady of the State of California, and who I personally think is truly an Architect of Change, is the force behind this powerful experience year after year called The Women's Conference. She is someone who stands for everyone being architects of change in their lives. She is about ready to "let go" of her position of First Lady and with that The Women's Conference. In her Keynote speech, she shared with us a bit of her journey. She never wanted or dreamed of ever being a First Lady, and had no clue what she was going to do in this position. She thought about it a lot, talked about it a lot with her friends and family, and still had not a clue what she would "do". What she came to realize very quickly is she was "IT".
So who would she "be" and what she would create was the place she came to. Maria shared more with this year's Conference attendees on her very close relationship with her Mom, Eunice Shriver. They spoke twice a day. If she ever found herself contemplating or thinking too much, her Mom would simply say..."Maria, you have a job to do, do it well, finish the job, and I don't want to hear another yip out of you!" These were powerful words that would set Maria on a course to dig deep into her value of service and the difference she could make. She is one woman, an Architect of Change, and a true leader who moves from thinking to action. Because she is a leader who is authentic, vulnerable, courageous, and does her job so very well, she is an expert in enrolling others in her vision, and makes it happen. From that, she went on to spend the last seven years creating conferences that inspired many Architects of Change, leaders all over the country making a difference, looking at the bigger picture of what they wanted to create and change, in not only their life but the lives of others.
The quote she shared from her Mom, Eunice, reminds me so much of what our co-founder Barbara Fagan always says, "Rocks are hard, and water's wet....so what, now what!" We have results every day, are they in alignment with what we want? If not, who do we get to be, and what actions will we take to create the result we want? I always say "leaders don't wait", and each one of us has the potential, that power to create anything we want in life. We are in the driver's seat, have the power position, and all we must do is stop thinking about it. Each day since the conference, when there is a task in front of me, I remember Eunice Shriver's words - "You have a job to do, do it well, finish the job, and I don't want to hear another yip out of you!" It empowers me to stop thinking about it, stop giving in to my circumstances, or the little voice in my head that doubts my capabilities, and tap into my resources. We all have that choice. "Everything is a choice", says my 9 year old son. And you know what? He is right on the money with that one.
Where are you thinking, considering, allowing your circumstances to stop you from having what you want in life? What if you embraced change? What if you shifted to possibility, took action, and created a reality beyond what you even imagined? Would you be fulfilled? What would that create for you, and those around you?
It's the last quarter of 2010, have you done your job? Did you get what you wanted? Are you fulfilled? As you head into 2011, get clear on what will be different for you, and take a leap that I promise will assist you in creating the results you truly want.
