Greetings!
Welcome back to Source Points! This week, Kelly Mobeck, Director of Leadership Source, shares with us her experiences and connections to two historical events whose recent anniversaries provided all of us the the opportunity to reflect and learn. As you read her article, we encourage you to consider how leadership and being in service lives in your life. Where have you been the pebble in the pond that created the ripple effect? What legacy seeds are you planting? How are we together creating positive change in the world? Respectfully,
Barbara Fagan Lou Dozier

Being In Service As a Leader | by Kelly Mobeck, Leadership Source Director |
This past weekend, our country remembered and honored two events that caused us to stop and reflect about the choices that we make, and how many opportunities that we have each day to raise up and take a strong leadership stand. Oftentimes we do not see these opportunities until it is too late. Leadership is about seeing and acting in the moment to make a difference for something bigger than you.
Celebrating the anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech reminded each of us of the power of speaking about a DREAM to all those around us, and how it can ignite new attitudes and actions that can change our world. Rev. King had a purpose for his life, and a vision that has lived long after his sudden death.
This weekend I watched a documentary about the horrific aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the impact on New Orleans. The impact of the storm was not noted as significantly as the impact it had on the people. It was a wake-up call for all of us. Many people saw, and realized, how important it is to respond quickly and not wait for others to take the lead. Once the realization of the devastation reached around the world, many leaders took action.
I am proud to say that shortly after Katrina, I had facilitated a Leadership training in Portland, OR, where the group asked themselves what they could do to contribute to New Orleans. And since "leaders don't wait," they got on airplanes, took donations, found building materials and refurbished an abandoned house into a Medical Clinic in the Lower 9th Ward. That clinic still serves the community today. Two years later, another Leadership training I facilitated in New Orleans still saw opportunities to take a leadership stand. They worked in the Lower 9th Ward with Brad Pitt's non-profit, Make It Right, and refurbished an old building into a community center.
I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of both of these Leadership groups working with the people who learned powerful principles of Leadership. Two very important principles we coach to all Leadership participants are:
- Lead with Purpose and Vision. When I am clear on my purpose, I am able to take committed action and work with others who have a shared purpose. We all then create a larger vision together. Purpose grounds me in my direction -- it is like a rudder on my ship that keeps me moving forward.
- Leaders Don't Wait. It is all about committed action. Leaders take purposeful action and know how to inspire those around them to be in action with clear purpose. Waiting for others to take action many times creates negative consequences for many.
This weekend, I had an opportunity to revisit my purpose in life and how I live it each day. I am honored to be able to lead and facilitate the Leadership Source training, and assist each person to see how they can be a leader in any area of their life. Our Leadership Coaches are committed to coach leadership principles over a ten-week period. Each person steps out and leads with purpose and vision and takes committed action each day of their life.
Leaders don't wait -- go for it! We are enrolling for our last Leadership Source of 2010 taking place in Seattle, WA right now.
