Weekly Empowerment from Source Point Training | July 29, 2010
Greetings!

It is amazing -- we are heading into the eighth month of the year.  Time does fly when you are having so much fun! And let me tell you, while there has been a great deal of work in launching Source Point Training, we have truly been having fun in the process. How can you not have fun when you are surrounded by "our people"; kindred spirits all committed to being the change to make a difference in the world.

And part of what we find fun and very rewarding is each time we step into a new training or workshop. We are excited to see friends and colleagues that maybe we haven't seen for a while and excited to meet and welcome new friends into our community --"our people."  Part of the excitement comes from knowing the impact that these participants will make when they step out of the training/workshop, as well as back into their personal and professional lives. It is wonderful to see broader perspectives, stronger interpersonal skills and a clear ownership of self-empowerment to effect change everywhere they go.

We warmly invite you to consider what is next for you in your journey of personal and professional development, and to step in with us. From Leadership Source, to the opportunities within The Source Institute, or our upcoming Manifest Vision Living Abundantly workshop, there is something for everyone! See you soon!

Respectfully,
Barbara Fagan & Lou Dozier, Co-Founders

Coach Training is Not Just for Coaches
Brad Stauffer, On The Mark Branding

"Why would I ever enroll in a coach training program?" I was really surprised when my friend questioned my recommendation that she enroll in coach training. After all, she had been a manager for quite a few years, and always strived to improve her skills. Her company had provided some management training, but I knew coach training would be much more effective. I really wanted her to experience the difference it could make for her, like it did for me.

As a strategic thinker and doer, I advanced pretty quickly into management. The executives liked how I contributed at various levels, understood the bigger picture and executed the details. So leading others to be just as effective was a natural step. In-house training and those $99 one-day classes were helpful, but didn't really make a big difference in my style. It wasn't until I did some powerful leadership training on my own, and enrolled in coach training, that I started to improve how I operated, my listening and communication skills and more. My promotion into senior management was a direct result of the shifts I made through what I experienced and learned in coach training. It can make major difference for company managers, association directors and other organizational leaders.

Coach training is all about creating results. It is powerful training that other organizational leadership and management programs can't even touch. For example, I had learned the importance of being a good listener, but thought it was just about being quiet and "attentive." In coach training, I learned to "deeply listen," (way different than being attentive); to be entirely focused on the other person; to be "with" them in the communication. I learned to get out of my head, and to get "over there" with them. I learned to be objective, not to form opinions or judgments so quickly; to ask questions and be inquisitive, instead of just giving orders. It impacted my career as well as my volunteer work. And that's just the beginning.

I advanced because I could visualize the company goals and knew how to achieve them. But my semi-effective management style was about convincing my team I had a good plan, giving detailed direction, a little rah-rah, and then back to my desk. No sincere listening, little openness to doing it differently, and not much attention to the relationships. Coach training changed all of that. Authenticity, trust and respect replaced my "I'm the manager" attitude and always having the right answer. My verbal and written communication skills shifted in effectiveness. Relationships went from one-way (what I needed) to mutually respectful partnerships, fulfilling objectives together.

Applying coaching skills is a powerful strategy for managers and directors to increase results, as well as retention. It positively impacts team work and commitment across the board. As awareness of the power of coach training grows, more and more professionals, board members and executives, see it as a powerful opportunity in their development. Even the Society for Human Resource Management, the world's largest association for HR professionals, recognizes the effectiveness of coach training, evidenced by including it in their education and training conferences around the world. Many professionals are receiving the training, even without the goal of being a professional coach. Coach training creates masterful managers and powerful people that effectively move organizations to the next level.

After my friend finished her coach training, she was eventually promoted, and even got engaged! "Thank you for telling me about the impact of coach training," she said. "My life and career are so different now." I smiled, and remembered the dedication she had to becoming her best self. Then stepping back into my old-self for a split second, I thought, "I knew it would make a difference for her. I was right! She just needed to listen to me."
