Weekly Empowerment from Source Point Training | July 22, 2010
Greetings!

Are you a leader or a follower? Can we be both? Of course we can. And we would assert that to be a leader in the fullest sense is to know when to be in support of another leader. Similarly, are you a giver or a taker? We would further assert that in truly being a giver, there must be times when we receive, that others may give to us.

In this issue of Source Points, we will share wonderful lessons of leadership as we look at the lessons we can learn from communities of geese. Many have heard of the power of geese flying in a V formation; especially if you study nature or have ever watch "The Mighty Ducks" movie with your children. And they have so much more to teach us as we share below.

We are also excited to share two new partnership opportunities with you that were first announced in our Virtual Office Party on Tuesday evening. If you missed the party, we'll share with you how to download the recording! We had a blast!

And, thanks to the generosity of so many "givers," we are also sharing the details of our EBay Auction to benefit the R.E.D. Scholarship Fund. The auction is now open and we invite you to be in service to others by supporting the auction. R.E.D. is actively supporting the educational dreams for many people and they are looking towards collaborating with other non-profits with shared purpose to support those wishing to take on new skills for themselves and joining us in being the change in the world.

So, enjoy this issue of Source Points, and be in action today to lead, follow, give and receive. As we live life to the fullest, we are being the change the world is longing for.

Respectfully,
Barbara Fagan & Lou Dozier, Co-Founders

The Flying V Isn't Just for Geese or "The Mighty Ducks"
Kelly Mobeck, Leadership Source Director

We have completed one Leadership Source training in Sacramento, launched another in Atlanta this past weekend, and are now building the Seattle training in October. I am beginning to see a common theme: "soaring with leaders" at Source Point Training. That theme reminds me of one of my favorite leadership contributions that I'd like to share:

Leadership Lessons from Geese
By Robert McNeish, former Assoc. Superintendent of Baltimore Public Schools, 1972
Kelly Mobeck
Fact 1
: As each goose flaps its wings, it creates"uplift" for the birds that follow. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew alone.
Lesson: People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.

Fact 2:
When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It quickly moves back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front of it.
Lesson: If we have as much sense as a goose, we stay in formation with those headed where we want to go. We are willing to accept their help and give our help to others.

Fact 3:
When the lead goose tires, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies to the point position.
Lesson: It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership. As with geese, people are interdependent on each other's skills, capabilities and unique arrangements of gifts, talents or resources.

Fact 4:
The geese flying in formation honk to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.
Lesson: We need to make sure honking is encouraging. In groups where there is encouragement, the production is much greater. The power of encouragement (to stand by one's heart or core values and encourage the heart and core of others) is the quality of honking we seek.

Fact 5:
When a goose gets sick, wounded, or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it. They stay with it until it dies or is able to fly again. Then, they launch out with another formation or catch up with the flock.
Lesson: If we have as much sense as geese, we will stand by each other in difficult times as well as when we are strong.

I love the community aspect of the geese, and at Source Point Training, we align with that philosophy. Take a leap today and join us at My Source Point Community, where leaders, coaches, and facilitators are definitely flying in "V" formation. We would love you to join the community and feel free to honk! Your contribution matters.

GavelThank you for supporting this worthy cause and being part of the ripple effect. "Give a man a fish, he eats for a day; teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime." Let's make sure that money is not an obstacle for those wishing to "eat for a lifetime" by investing in themselves and their future impact in their communities and our world.
