The results keep coming! Congratulations to the latest graduates of Leadership Source on achieving their goals including some literally landing on their feet, after big jumps in risk-taking. As some of you know, Barbara is on the faculty of Marcia Wieder's Dream University too, so we welcome Dream Coaches to our Source Point Training community.
Besides another Leadership Source beginning in Atlanta, we will both be on the road in July. Lou is heading to Lima, Peru for the ICF Latin American Conference. | Leaders Don't Wait! | |  What a fantastic weekend we had with the Sacramento Leadership Source group. I had no idea what we were in for as I prepared to come to the weekend. What I did know was that these leaders had stretched way out of their comfort zone for the past nine weeks. They created absolutely amazing results all along the way. So I should not have been surprised with what was about to occur Saturday evening.
The group made a request to adjust the weekend schedule...and go skydiving together! I thought this would be a great opportunity to coach them through fear and moving forward no matter what. Little did I know that I would be part of that stretch too. Boy, I am glad I was!
Leaders don't wait...especially at 13,000 feet in the air as the door flies open on a perfectly good airplane. Then it's just one leg out, duck and dive, and you are flying through the sky. I am amazed at how sky diving is like leadership. How many times do we feel like we have so much going on and life is spinning out of control? Or how often do we know we want to take on change, a new project or want something new in our lives, and we are not clear where to begin?
Well, that's what I was thinking as I was completely scared out of my mind when I neared that airplane door. When I finally jumped, the ground began to get closer very quickly and I wondered for a moment if I would end up being bug splat. What I knew for sure was that there was no turning back, so it was best to free my mind of all the fear and take it all in.
Then, all of a sudden the "interruption" of the parachute opening allowed me to catch my breath while I became very clear I was going to reach my goal. This was complete surrender for me, which gave me freedom to enjoy the ride as we descended toward our goal (the ground). (Of course, my tandem master Blaine, made sure it was a "thrill-a-minute" with spins, turns and one crazy roller coaster ride!) I would do it again and again. It was awesome! For me, this was the cycle of change, the journey towards completing an outcome or a goal. As a leader, we must be willing to jump in the middle and go for it. We must be the interruption or the opening parachute, while we surrender to the resources around us. And above all else, enjoy the ride, because after all that's what life is all about.
I would jump out of a perfectly good airplane, with a parachute of course, any time. I encourage you to consider doing the same. We can really do anything we set our minds to. For me, that is what leadership is all about: leading, living and loving life! Who's ready to jump?
