Gators Have a Heart for Haiti

As
we are all aware of disaster that has struck Haiti, we as a Gatewood
family would love to give back. Gatewood has chosen to give donations
to World Vision. World Vision has been focusing on children since 1950.
World Vision is a Christian humanitarian charity organization dedicated
to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide
to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and
injustice. Your gift will help World Vision staff members rush emergency
assistance to Haitians -- like food, clean water, blankets, tents, and
more. More information can be found at: www.worldvision.org
During
the month of February, we are going to have dress down days every Wednesday.
It is $3.00 for grades K3 through 12th to dress down per day. If possible,
we encourage every faculty member and student to participate.
If you would like to pay by check please make all checks payable to
World Vision. Gatewood will send all donations in together.
If you are unable to make a monetary donation, we will be partnering
with First Presbyterian Day School in Macon to provide needed items
to be dispensed at St. Marc's church in Trouin, Haiti.FPD has been sponsoring this church for the last
three ye ars. Trouin, Haiti is located due west of Port-au-Prince and
was also affected by this tragedy. More information will be given when
available. Please keep Haiti in your thoughts and prayers in the coming weeks as relief
efforts continue to reach them. We will keep you updated on our efforts
in the coming weeks.

Alumni Spotlight
Amanda Davis, Class of 2004
What are you currently doing?
I'm living in Memphis, Tennessee, and working as a nurse at Saint Francis Hospital in the Cardiovascular/ Neuro Intensive Care Unit.
After high school graduation, what college did you attend?
I attended the University of Georgia where I graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences with an emphasis in Child and Family Development. After graduation, I entered the Medical College of Georgia where I graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
While in college were you a member of a club or group?
I was a member of Delta Delta Delta, Delta Epsilon Iota Academic Honor Society, Sigma Theta Tau-Beta Omicron Chapter, Girl Scouts, Georgia Association of Nursing Students and the Wesley Foundation.
Are you pursuing additional degrees or certifications?
My plan is to return to school in 2010 or 2011 to the University of Tennessee at Memphis for a Doctorate of Nursing Practice with a focus in Acute Care Nursing.
What role did Gatewood play in your success after graduation?
Even more than the academic portion, my life at Gatewood taught me how to manage time and extra curricular activities. From playing sports to being involved in clubs and extra groups, needless to say, Gatewood kept me busy. Going away to college was really similar; there were always things to do and activities to participate in. My time at Gatewood taught me priority and time management skills that continue to carry over into my post-graduate life. Also, without Mr. DeLoach's biology and anatomy classes, I would have never made it through college and then nursing school. (This is not a joke.)
What is your best (or favorite) memory from your time spent at Gatewood?
There are way too many to count. From K-4 through lower school with grandparents days, book fairs, PE classes, and recess. To middle school with Mrs. Knowles, Mrs. Hudson and Mrs. Thomas - filled with lockers, Washington DC exams and sports. Then on to high school with Mrs. Haley, Mrs. Haslett and Mr. DeLoach - from playing and watching sports to homecoming weeks, planning prom to practicing graduation. All of it was fun-filled with good times, good friends and good memories. My real best memory is when Mrs. Haley's pants split when she bent over in class - but I doubt that that is appropriate for the newsletter! Or, dissecting the pigs and cat in Mr. DeLoach's anatomy class.

Grace Bridges Wins Show
Grace Bridges traveled to Alpharetta in early December to compete in her first
United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) A rated horse show. Grace and the pony began the competition with a
clean sweep of the blue ribbons and rode to a championship in the 11 and under
equitation classes. Impressively, the pair took a 3rd place ribbon in the
USEF Pony Medal, an over fences division, competing against 24 other riders of
all ages and experience levels. Grace and Caraway Charlotte had only
shown at local shows up until this competition, but with Grace in the
saddle, took a 1st, 2nd, two 4th places and a 5th place in the Green Pony
Hunter Division which combines over fences and flat classes. Grace and the pony continue
to work toward the ambitious goal of qualifying for the USEF National Pony
