Gators Have a Heart for Haiti

As
we are all aware of disaster that has struck Haiti, we as a Gatewood
family would love to give back. Gatewood has chosen to give donations
to World Vision. World Vision has been focusing on children since 1950.
World Vision is a Christian humanitarian charity organization dedicated
to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide
to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and
injustice. Your gift will help World Vision staff members rush emergency
assistance to Haitians -- like food, clean water, blankets, tents, and
more. More information can be found at: www.worldvision.org
During
the month of February, we are going to have dress down days every Wednesday.
It is $3.00 for grades K3 through 12th to dress down per day. If possible,
we encourage every faculty member and student to participate.
If you would like to pay by check please make all checks payable to
World Vision. Gatewood will send all donations in together.
If you are unable to make a monetary donation, we will be partnering
with First Presbyterian Day School in Macon to provide needed items
to be dispensed at St. Marc's church in Trouin, Haiti.FPD has been sponsoring this church for the last
three ye ars. Trouin, Haiti is located due west of Port-au-Prince and
was also affected by this tragedy. More information will be given when
available. Please
to keep Haiti in your thoughts and prayers in the coming weeks as relief
efforts continue to reach them. We will keep you updated on our efforts
in the coming weeks.

Faculty Spotlight
Royce Morris
BA, Rhodes College
JD, Vanderbilt Law School
MAT, University of New Hampshire
What inspires you to
teach?
My inspiration comes primarily from my high school English
teacher who not only taught me literature but also helped me grow as a
person. I was touched recently by a
letter I received from my former student thanking me for my overall influence
on him his sophomore year and mentioning one particular incident. His letter shows the kind of influence a
teacher can have on a student.
What is your most
memorable moment in teaching?
My most memorable moment is the announcement to the school
that the Class of 2006 chose me as their tassel turner at graduation, along
with the speech I gave to that class at their senior dinner.
What are your
hobbies/outside interests? What else
would you like the Gatewood family to know about you?
I enjoy golf during the summer, and I enjoy gardening. I have a pontoon boat and enjoy spending time
with friends on the lake. |

6th Grade Makes Volcanoes
by Jessica Pierson and Emily Schneider
In
our 6th grade science class we have been studying volcanoes. We did
a project in groups of three where we had to make volcanoes. One person made a
shield volcano, another made a composite volcano, and one person made the
cinder cone volcano. We had the option to choose what materials to make our
volcanoes with. The most used items were clay, Paper Mache, and cookie dough.
Then we had to decorate our boards. We used items like trees, rocks, animals,
people, and buildings and then added rivers and lakes. Once we were done
decorating the board and attached our volcanoes, Mrs. Lee would take a picture
of us with the volcano project and then we added baking soda and vinegar to
make them blow!!!

Mentos and Diet Coke Experiment
by
Annah Kennedy, 6th Grade
Each student had to bring only two things; a two-liter
bottle of Diet Coke and one package of Mentos mints. Our class was finally
going to blow a soda volcano! Two boys carried a table while the rest of us carried our supplies to the back of the football field. After this was done, we
went three at a time. It was our choice on how many Mentos to slip into
the Diet Coke. A Mentos has tiny craters so when it combines with the
carbonation in the soda you get one sweet BOOM!. Our class had some duds,
but we also had ones that would've touched the sky if the blows were any
higher! That was one awesome science experiment that I am not likely to
forget.

Fourth Grade Makes Christmas Ornaments
Students in Ms. Connie's and Ms. Dianne's classes have
created several keepsake ornaments. In
Ms. Connie's class, students created a beautiful "Angel" tree with
shells that Ms. Connie collected on her beach trips. Each shell was transformed with love into
sweet angels that will adorn their home trees for years to come. Students also created cute gingerbread men to
decorate the assembly hall tree. Students
in Ms. Dianne's room created wooden painted Christmas ornaments, as well as,
beautiful porcelain ornaments. Fourth
Grade just completed wonderful Science Book Report projects. Students had to choose a science book, read
the book, and then create a project to teach something learned in their book.
