Fosters and Adoption Reps Needed! Volunteer and help the hounds! |
|
Hello Friends, GRRers & Fellow Greyhound Lovers:
It appears summer has arrived early. Remember greyhounds succumb to the heat very easily and heat stroke can be fatal. It is nothing to take lightly! Black dogs and older hounds are hardest hit, but all greyhounds are at risk as they don't have any fat to act as an insulator. DO NOT under any circumstances leave your hounds in the car, not in the shade, not AT ALL unless you're in it too. An idling car can stall and also, the a/c doesn't work as well if a vehicle isn't moving. Heat plus hounds is NO laughing matter and is to be taken seriously!
Please take a look at all of the picnic information below. Flyers were sent in the mail and you should have received yours by now. Make sure to rsvp for the picnic. The 50-50 drawing will be held at the picnic. Don't forget to buy your tickets! We also have a fabulous ornament for sale, see photo and description. This will be a wonderful keepsake for years to come and it benefits the hounds!
Speaking of black hounds, we have SEVEN black dogs up for adoption. Check out their photos and write-ups. Also don't miss the terrific article by Sanjay Prakash, "All Greyhounds Need Homes". Isn't that the truth?
For the hounds, Christine Johnson |

Memories by Ruth Tuccio
 | Ornament is $20, all proceeds benefit GRR |
I adopted my first greyhound Chelsea in 1993 and six months later Jake came home, a seven year old bounce. The following year I became an adoption rep and the rest as they say is history.
Fast forward to 1997 when the group president had an ornament designed to sell as a fundraiser. I can remember discussing the design and anxiously awaiting the finished product. I was so excited, I couldn't wait to get mine.
Many years have since passed, dogs have gone to the Bridge along with some very special greyhound friends, but what remains are some wonderful memories.
That ornament represents so much more than just a pretty object to place on my tree or to display in my home. It's a reminder of the lasting friendships, the meet and greets, the hauls we met, the parades we marched in and the picnics we planned and sometimes the tears we shared.
My hope is that in addition to being a successful fundraiser, this wonderful GRR ornament (designed by our president Christine) will become a cherished treasure for everyone else as well.
The design is universal for greyhound lovers everywhere. The cost is $20 and all proceeds benefit GRR. So buy one for yourself and a friend, what a great Christmas gift! Don't wait another minute, reserve yours now by emailing me at ruthtuccio@sbcglobal.net. If you should get busy and forget, you can still buy or order extras at the picnic.
Heidi and Gabriel are ready to take your order, to help their friends still waiting for their forever homes.
See you at the picnic! |

All Greyhounds Need Homes by Sanjay Prakash
My wife Laura and I have been lucky enough to share our lives with four greyhounds, so far... Our first greyhound "Max" was a handsome fawn boy we adopted in 2000. Max was chosen for us by the rescue group as a perfect fit for our family. Our second, "Calliope" a

Max and Callie |
beautiful black girl joined us in 2003. We fell in love with her at a meet and greet and she and Max got along very well. In 2010, an extremely large, but gentle black boy named "Fred" was in need of a home and joined the family. In 2011, we adopted our fourth, a playful fawn and white girl named, "Irish". We never considered the color of the dog when we were adopting. It simply did not matter. We fell in love with the dog, not the dog's color.
About a year ago, I read an article in the GRR newsletter that the group had been having difficulty placing newly rescued black dogs in homes because of their color. People can find large black dogs intimidating or maybe not as cute. Well Callie and Fred would like to say to you, hey, take a moment and get to know us. We are not different. We are gentle, affectionate, loyal and as beautiful as any greyhound. We can be playful, or laid back. Some of us are outgoing, some shy. We are sad when you leave and happy when you come home. Maybe some people find us scary, but if they see us out with you, it may change their mind. Plus, we are perfect for you if you wear a lot of black clothing, just ask Laura. Hey, we are trying here!
So, next time you are at a meet and greet or on the webpage, take a moment, look into our eyes. You'll find a beautiful, loving dog that just wants a chance at a better life.
Laura and I would like to add, and I am sure every GRR adopter that has or ever had a black greyhound would agree, they make wonderful pets. Their coloring has nothing to do with their personality. You never know what kind of adventure you are in for when you adopt one. They will become a part of you and make everything around you a little better. So, no matter the coloring they all deserve a chance.

Featured Hounds for Adoption
GRR has SEVEN black dogs for adoption (Roller is not one of the featured hounds because he will be going to his new home soon!). Some of these dogs have been the featured hounds previously and are still looking for their forever homes, some are newer arrivals. All of these dogs are wonderful. Think about adopting one of these black beauties. |
Armada by Jen Spagnolo

Sex: Male
Color: Black
Age: 2 Years
Cats: Workable
Armada is a two year old boy. He turns three in July. He is a quiet boy who walks around inspecting everything. He is adjusting to a routine. He gets along very well with the other hounds and the lab. He is curious about the cats so I would consider him workable for now. |
Blackstone by Zita Gulitz
Sex: Male Color: Black Age: 4 years Cats: Yes
Blackstone is four years old. He arrived May 19th and is still trying to figure everything out. He gets along well with the resident greys and after a few licks, became my granddaughter's best friend. So far, he's quiet and very gentle. He just watches what the others do. He sleeps in the bedroom and is content. |
Blaze by Karen Marcelynas
Sex: Male Color: Black Age: 2 years Cats: Yes
As Blaze finishes the final stage of his recovery from a broken leg, he continues to settle in nicely on his journey to being a pet. He loves everyone he meets, always with a wagging tail. Not much fazes him, though he does prefer the company of the four resident greyhounds in his foster home to being alone. Whoever adopts this sweet gentle pup will have hit the jackpot. |
Gambler by Pam Fanara
Sex: Male Color: Black Age: 4 years Cats: Workable
Gambler is a sweet four year old enjoying the company of humans and another foster grey Nova. He is very respectful and listens well to gentle corrections. He is easy going with us and submissive to Nova, lays down nicely when traveling by car and is great on a leash. Who says greyhounds never bark? Gambler feels it's his duty to occasionally let you know when a stranger is at your door. This handsome fellow enjoys and seeks attention and petting, but is not pushy. He will make a delightful and rather dapper-looking companion. |
JoyJoy by Christine Johnson

Sex: Female Color: Black Age: 3 years Cats: Yes
JoyJoy came into our home as a foster about six weeks ago to recover from a toe amputation. With six other greyhounds in the house, it was too easy for her foot to get trounced on so she spent most of the first three weeks healing in her crate. She's now completely recovered and has easily integrated herself with our pack. She's a funny little imp and constantly keeps us laughing with her silly antics. For example, all our other hounds approach us from the front to say hello. NOT JoyJoy!! She comes from behind and sticks her head between your legs all wiggly and waggly tailed. She's not the brightest bulb in the shed, but she's lovable, endearing and eager to please. Black dogs are really special. They try so hard to make us happy, they're so grateful for the chance to be chosen as a pet. It's as if they know they're the first to be passed over. Give a black dog a chance. You won't be sorry. |
LuLu by Pam West
Sex: Female Color: Black Age: 4 years Cats: Yes
Lulu is a black beauty, to be sure. She is sleek and gorgeous. She loves people and comes running to get pet by every visitor who enters her foster home. She desperately wants to please and is a quick learner. She is, however, a fragile girl who needs a calm situation to thrive. Loud noises and quick moves can frighten her and send her running to the safety of her crate. She is cat safe, but is timid of other dogs until she has a chance to get to know that they aren't going to hurt her. When strange dogs approach on a walk she tends to panic so we go out with the muzzle on. At present, Lulu is being fostered in our home with two other greyhounds and a cat. After a period of adjustment, she has been fine with all. She even gets on fine with our visiting, vivacious, three year human. She will be a shadow and follow whenever her human gets up, whether it is to the kitchen to get a snack or to the computer room to write up this little blurb. She is a real sweetheart and will bond closely to her new family.

Mickey by Debbie Napolitano

Sex: Male Color: Black Age: 5 years Cats: No
Five year old Mickey was returned at the same time as his housemate Minnie, both through no fault of theirs. At first, Mickey is shy and insecure, but as he develops confidence in new situations, he becomes a bit more outgoing and affectionate. Mickey walks well on the leash, but he prefers the privacy a fenced yard allows for bathroom duties. Mickey is a greyhound we consider to be "high prey drive". Not only isn't he compatible with cats, but he can't be trusted in the company of small dogs either. We hope to be able to place Mickey and Minnie in the same home with someone who has love and patience to give them the time they need to adapt to their new surroundings so their loving personalities can shine.

Bark at the Ballpark by Adam Newman

Laddie in his Boulders uniform |
We attended the Rockland Boulders game on Sunday, 5/27 and had a good day. We had a nice spot right inside the main gate underneath the overhang in the shade. We met alot of people, planted some seeds about greyhounds and met a family who is interested in fostering for us.
Fosters Gambler, Tiger and Nova handled the day like troopers and mixed and mingled with everyone. Ambassadog Mac also did a great job and of course my boy Laddie worked the crowd and showed his support for the Rockland Boulders by tolerating wearing a miniature Boulders team batting helmet which the crowds got a kick out of.
Thanks again to Pam Fanara for bringing Gambler and Nova, to Cindy Stickles for coming to help handle the two of them, to Daryl Lindholm for bringing Tiger, to Anita Stern for bringing Mac and of course thanks to my sidekick Laddie.
