Greyhound Help Wanted
Fosters and Adoption Reps Needed!  Volunteer and help the hounds!

Hello Friends, GRRers & Fellow Greyhound Lovers:

There is a very deserving group of greyhounds who are becoming more and more in need of loving homes. As more racing kennels and tracks close, there is less breeding going on so more and more brood moms are without jobs...having babies. These wonderful girls, usually between the ages of seven-11, are so deserving of spending their final days in the lap of luxury. I know it's hard to think of having a hound to love for a short period of time, but just think what a kindness it would be for them to be showered with love, have a nice soft bed and all the other comforts our resident "pets" have. I get asked all the time if GRR can take in a broodie or two, but we haven't been doing as much as we should. They are so sweet and easy. Won't you think about adopting a brood? It's a true gift of giving. Check out Nina on our website. She's nine years young and full of life. If you'd like to give a home to a golden oldie, please let me know so the next time I get a list I can agree to take one or two.

We have two new groups of hounds arriving, May 5th and May 19th. Both groups are coming from Florida. We need some volunteers to help with intake (bathing and driving) as well as foster homes. E-mail me if you can help!

Speaking of volunteering, have you ever thought about becoming more involved with GRR? Have you ever thought about becoming an adoption rep? We are having a meeting on May 17 at 6:30 p.m. for anyone interested. The GRR adoption reps will be there and we'll be discussing various aspects of what we do in our roles as placement reps. RSVP to me at christine@greyhoundrescuerehab.org.

Picnic News - GUGG, Raffle and Silent Auction Items Needed

Contact Andrea Guttman at williesmydog@aol.com if you have gently used greyhound goods (GUGG)  that can be sold at the picnic and Siobhan Buchko at siobhanmaldonado@gmail.com for new items to be donated to the raffle and silent auction. Sissy (four months old) & Dillon (10 months old), both need to have surgery to correct their badly damaged legs and without our medical fund, we wouldn't be able to provide the care they, and other injured hounds, need.

Featured Hound for Adoption

Casper
Casper

Casper by Victoria Landmark

Sex: Male
Color: Fawn
Age: 2 Years

Cats: Yes

Casper has adjusted to life off the track. He's been enjoying his time with our greyhound and Italian greyhound while he learns the ropes of being part of a family. He always tries to do the right thing to fit in. He can be a little cautious around strangers, especially men entering the home, but warms up in time. He loves to go for long walks and experience the world, as well as drives in the car. He's a great eater and has acclimated to home life quite nicely. He's a beautiful gentle boy! Casper is always ready for a brisk walk or trot. He's jumps at the chance to join in outings around town and parks.

Wonderful Senior Dog Needs a Home

Roller by Annabel Saunders

Sex:  Male

Color:  Black

Age:  9 Years

Cats:  Yes

Foster boy Roller is doing brilliantly with his newly sparkling-clean teeth. He is a super-friendly, easygoing, big, love bug with the softest fur and gentle manners who likes to snuggle and to hang out with people and dogs. He tested cat safe and walks beautifully on leash. He also enjoys a wander on his own around the fenced yard. Mostly he likes keeping an eye on his people for all the good things they bring to his life.

He is house trained; does not go on furniture; is all up to date on shots; eats well; sleeps well; does not make noise etc. - in fact we cannot fault him!

Roller is looking for his own special person who will love him forever and never let him down. He has endless capacity for love and trust.

Roller was returned to GRR through no fault of his at nine years old. This terrific boy is deserving of his truly forever home.

I Do Not Want a Brindle Greyhound by Cheryl Winter

Sarah
Sarah

Last October I lost the younger of our two greyhounds and my senior foster boy on the same day. I thought I would never be able to welcome another greyhound into my home, as my thought was, I could never replace my Minnie or my Cricket. I am so grateful for the love and support I received from my fellow greyhound lovers and animal lovers.

In January, I began thinking that I can never replace the two beautiful friends that I lost, but I could give another greyhound their spot in a loving, caring foster home. In hindsight, my thinking about opening our home to another greyhound was absolutely ridiculous, but let's just blame my grief on my foolish ideas. My thought process went something like; no, I couldn't think about giving another dog a forever home, that just wasn't going to happen. I saw an adorable picture that Christine Johnson posted on FaceBook of a little tiny brindle girl, Tiger that was coming to Connecticut from West Virginia. For those of you who did not see the picture, Tiger is sitting in the lap of Britta looking so sweet. I thought well that dog would be a "safe" dog for me to take, she is brindle and I definitely do not want a brindle hound. After all, my favorite colors are fawn and white with fawn or black (I know greyhounds are not cars and we don't choose them by color but I'm pretty sure my broken heart was doing my thinking.)

I sent Christine a message asking if we could foster Tiger. She called me and during our conversation, Christine said that Tiger is cat friendly. I said we do not have any cats, so did she want to place Tiger in a foster home that has cats and we could take a hound that is not cat safe? Christine hesitated and said that she and her husband were fostering a little brindle girl recovering from a broken leg, Sarah. Christine told me how much she and Chris love Sarah and they want to make sure she goes to a home that will love her and can help rehab her leg. I told Christine we could do that, well for a little while, anyway, was my thought.

Greyhounds Can Live with Small Animals by Mary Fleming

Greyhounds are used to living with many other dogs from their racing days, but cats and small dogs are new to them. Unfortunately, some dogs have been trained to race using live bait and those dogs typically cannot live with small animals when they retire. It also depends on the dog's prey drive whether they can adjust to having small animals as house mates. GRR tests each greyhound that comes into our adoption program to see if the dog can live with cats and other small animals.

Red and Princess
Claudia on the dog bed and Red on the cat bed

Right off the bat when cat testing, we know some dogs can live with small animals while other dogs can't. Then there are dogs that it's not so obvious; for example, they will chase a cat, but not a small dog. Or they will chase a cat, but if the cat puts them in their place, the dog will back down.  Those dogs are categorized as cat workable.  It also depends on the cats or small dogs that the greyhound will be living with.  Two of my cats have always lived with dogs that put up with their antics. I rescued them from my parking lot when they were kittens and my dogs knew they were babies and were very tolerant. Now when I bring another dog home, the cats assume all dogs are as tolerant, which is not the case.   See the picture of Claudia and Red, who is cat safe to an extreme:)  If you have a dog that tested not cat safe, do not decide to bring home a cat or a miniature poodle and expect them to get along, it's likely not to be a successful arrangement.  Then again, I have had many non-cat safe foster dogs who lived just fine with cats and all was well because each had a section of the house.  Even though they were in separate quarters, however, all were given ample attention.

The good news is that 40-60% of greyhounds can live just fine with small animals, which is great because many people who adopt greyhounds have small pets. Keep in mind though whether a dog is deemed cat safe or not has absolutely no bearing on whether it will be a fantastic pet and live well with humans.

Below is a picture of another cat safe dog Shana, adopted by Miki Yoshiura and Mike Schoffel, and her kitty friend Lena.  Shana also lives with housemates Harrison, the greyhound and Niko, the French Bulldog.  Miki and Mike are fostering Lena the kitty who is looking for her forever home.  If you're interested in adopting Lena, please contact mikiyoshiura@aol.com.

Pet Pantry Rye Review by Olivia Guintini

It was a beautiful spring day for the first meet and greet of the year at Rye Pet Pantry on Saturday, April 14th.  Those in attendance were Event Chair Art with Howard, Janet with Sabine, Patricia and John with Teardrop and Ellie, Robin and Rob with Nolan, Pam with foster Nova, my husband Nick and myself with Sue.  The pups enjoyed all the attention and catching up with friends. Foster Nova acted like an old pro and charmed everyone she met.
