Hello Friends, GRRers & Fellow Greyhound Lovers:
January was a greyt month for GRR! Our Ebro survivor "Squirt" found her forever home with the Dean family and made the trip to Canada by car with her new dad, Derek and her skin-kid sister Jessica, to join the resident greyhounds, Brucie & Bumper. Be sure to watch the heart-warming, feel good video that chronicles her travels. Eight wonderful new hounds found their way to GRR from Florida and West Virginia. The "Super 7", five brindles and two fawns, from West Virginia are all fun loving hounds who should be making the meet & greet rounds soon and will all make terrific pets. If you haven't checked out the newbies on our website, be sure to take a look!
With spring right around the corner, we're looking for some new venues to promote greyhound adoptions. Ideally, flea markets, craft shows, street fairs, etc. are events with crowds of people who may not know what GREYT pets greyhounds make. These events are usually looking for "vendors" a couple of months before the date of the event. If you hear of something that would benefit the hounds, please get in touch with our event coordinator Bobbi Nelson at greytgreys@live.com.
We're taking a road trip to West Virginia this weekend. It's the first leg of GRR foster hound Nawtical's trip to Oklahoma City where he's being adopted to live with his sister and littermate Keira. We'll be bringing back some hounds currently on a breeding farm that are available for adoption. As always, foster homes will be needed. If you have "room at the inn" to take in one of these newbies, let me know by e-mail at greys4ever@aol.com.
Remember, we're working hard to make this GRR's best year ever...the year of the hound.
For the hounds,
Christine Johnson
President, GRR

Featured Hound for Adoption
Fawrist by Joyce Stillman
Sex: Male Color: White with Blue Brindle Age: 2 Years
Cats: Yes
Fawrist is doing great. What a love he is! Easy to walk on a leash, loves to take rides in a car and explore new places. He has met many dogs, and is great with them. Everybody he meets is his new best friend. He really enjoys his petting time (which is practically all day!) He will nuzzle in the crook of your arm, and look at you with those amazing eyes and plead for more ear rubs. Fawrist will make a terrific addition to the lucky family that adopts him.

Injured Hound Update
Sarah by Christine Johnson
Sex: Female
Color: Brindle
Age: 3 Years
Cats: TBD
Sarah has turned out to be a wonderful foster "child". She turned three on January 27th and we celebrated with extra treats and a ride in the car. As you can see by her picture, she's a dream traveler who is inquisitive for the first few minutes watching out the window and then quickly settles in for a snooze. She especially likes chewing on a bully stick too while cruising.
Sarah is one of the smartest, most precocious greyhounds I've ever met and I thoroughly enjoy her interest in life, watching her figure out how to get what she wants and seeing her learn what's right and wrong. She loves to learn and though sometimes unwilling to give up on something she's set her sights on (my first cup of morning coffee for example), when she realizes she's not winning the battle of wills, she is quick to find the first available dog bed and settle in for a nap. She has a wonderful, engaging personality getting along well with the other resident hounds and always welcomes humans with a wagging tail.
When moving quickly, especially in the house, Sarah still hops on three legs. She gets walked every day and I concentrate on getting her to walk on all four feet by walking slowly and putting my hand on her back. We're making great progress and she'll often take 12-15 steps before resorting back to hopping. In a recent visit to Dr. Palmisano, surgeon at Norwalk Veterinary Referral Center, his feeling is that there's still scar tissue in and around the foot that needs to be broken down.
A return visit is scheduled for mid-February, however there's no reason Sarah couldn't move on to a forever home with a family who's willing to continue her rehab. She's a delight and we'll be sad to see her move on.

February is Pet Dental Month
February is Pet Dental Month so this is a good reminder to have your dog's teeth looked at. Greyhounds typically have bad teeth because of the soft diet they are fed while racing. The intake process at GRR includes spay/neuter, vaccinations and dentals for each dog. If your dog has not had a dental since you adopted him or her or it's been a while since their last dental, have their teeth checked out now or at their next vet visit. Having your dog's teeth cleaned regularly will prevent tooth loss and gum infections. Bacteria from mouth infections can actually cause heart problems in dogs. You also want to make sure that your dog's teeth or gums are not causing pain for the dog. Remember too to keep the teeth clean by brushing your dog's teeth periodically in between their dentals because a clean mouth is a healthier mouth. |

Cold Weather Safety Tips for Pets
The following cold weather safety tips are for dogs and cats:
- Keep antifreeze away from pets and clean up any spills immediately. Animals like the taste of antifreeze and ingesting even tiny amounts can be deadly. If your dog or cat ingests antifreeze, bring it to a vet immediately.
- If you have an indoor/outdoor cat, bring it indoors at night or set up a box with blankets so it has a warm place to go. Check the cat's water bowl to make sure it hasn't frozen and has adequate water.
- Wipe your pet's paws after walks if they come in contact with ice melting products with sodium or chloride. These can cause gastroenteritis or neurological problems. You can also protect your dog's paws by buying dog boots.
- Wear reflective clothing for walks after dark and get your dog a reflective leash, collar or coat.
- Greyhounds needs coats when the weather dips below 40 degrees as they do not have a double coat like some other breeds.
- Be careful walking on mud or ice. Pets can slip and fall and get hurt just like humans.
- Cats like to curl up near car engines when the weather gets cold. Bang on your car hood or honk the horn before starting your engine on cold weather mornings in case your cat or your neighbor's cat is in there. A fanbelt can cause serious injuries or kill a cat.
- Don't leave pets in the car for long at any time of year including the winter.
