Foster Homes Needed!
New hounds will be arriving on January 16th. Six foster homes are needed. E-mail Christine at greys4ever@aol.com if you can foster. |
|
Hello Friends, GRRers & Fellow Greyhound Lovers:
As we say goodbye to 2011, it gives me pause to reflect on GRR's accomplishments. In a year fraught with economic insecurity that had a direct correlation to the continued decline in the racing industry and thus, the increase in the number of greyhounds needing to find a place to go, GRR continued to live up to its mission of helping as many hounds as possible especially those in need. 82 greyhounds came into GRR; six needing surgery to repair broken legs at a cost of approximately $3,500/per and two very special puppies, Izzie and Rudy, who without GRR's help wouldn't be alive, thriving and happily homed. Then there were the "golden oldies", the brood moms, LouLou, Mashaka and Luanda who had two careers, as racers and mothers, who could have spent the rest of their lives in kennels if GRR hadn't advocated for them, bringing them to New York where they too have found forever homes. And we can't forget the Freedom Run that brought 12 hounds safely to NY from Florida where they were in dire straights.
Since the closing of the tracks in the northeast, GRR can't do "business" the way we used to; jumping into cars, driving to the tracks to pick up and bring new hounds home. Each and every group now coming to NY takes planning and coordination which couldn't happen without the dedicated volunteers who show their care and kindness by giving time to help.
We're starting out the New Year with the arrival of new hounds from Florida and West Virginia. We're committed and they're coming. Six foster homes are urgently needed for the West Virginia hounds that will be here on January 16th.
Let's all strive to make 2012 "the year of the hounds" and help as many as we can get a second chance to run...right to the couches they deserve. Be sure to check out the year in pictures at GRR at the end of the newsletter.
Wishing you all a Happy and Healthy New Year.
For the hounds,
Christine Johnson
President, GRR

Our Wonderful Greyhounds
As we start a new year in GRR land, here are a few reminders of what makes greyhounds so special and why we're lucky to have them in our lives:
- Greyhounds are quiet, well mannered and loving
- Greyhounds are clean, with minimal shedding
- Greyhounds are calm and docile, needing no more exercise then most other large breeds
- Greyhounds live happily with cats and other small animals
- Greyhounds are easy to train and are very social
- Greyhounds are gentle and patient, making them wonderful pets and companions
- Greyhounds come in a large variety of colors, more than any other breed

So as there are always greyhounds in need of homes, remember to pass this on and hopefully someday all greyhounds will have their own forever home. |

Featured Hound for Adoption
Lulu by Pam West
Sex: Female Color: Black Age: 4 years old
Cats: Yes
Lulu is a black beauty, to be sure. She is sleek and gorgeous. She loves people and comes running to get pet by every visitor who enters her foster home. She desperately wants to please and is a quick learner. She is, however, a fragile girl who needs a calm situation to thrive. Loud noises and quick moves can frighten her and send her running to the safety of her crate. She is cat safe, but is timid of other dogs until she has a chance to get to know that they aren't going to hurt her. When strange dogs approach on a walk she tends to panic so we go out with the muzzle on. At present, Lulu is being fostered in our home with two other greyhounds and a cat. After a period of adjustment, she has been fine with all. She even gets on fine with our visiting, vivacious, three year human. She will be a shadow and follow whenever her human gets up, whether it is to the kitchen to get a snack or to the computer room to write up this little blurb. She is a real sweetheart and will bond closely to her new family.

Sassy (left) and Tempo |
Bonded Pair Need a Home Together
Sassy & Tempo
Sex: Female Color: Black Age: 17 months Cats: TBD
Sassy (with white on her nose) and Tempo are two very bonded female littermates who decided early on that chasing a "bunny" around a track wasn't their cup of tea. They are brand new to foster care but we already know that these two girls belong together in a home. Sassy is initially leery of people and is more confident when in the company of Tempo. She definitely wants affection, she just isn't sure what it's all about and has been known to give a few gentle kisses. Tempo is definitely the more outgoing of the two but interestingly, when Sassy is out of site, Tempo let's you know she wants her sister back. These two darling lovelies will thrive in a quiet, nurturing environment. |

Acupuncture by Mary Fleming
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese method of mapping points that lie on major nerve or vascular pathways. Needles are used to trigger nerves which then transmit to the brain to release pain killing hormones. These hormones suppress pain and act on blood vessels to improve organ health and function. Acupuncture can also be used to treat behavioral issues and improve the immune system.
My dog Rasta underwent acupuncture treatments when he started to have back pain from arthritis. It worked well to relieve his pain and increase his mobility.
If you think your pet(s) may be a candidate for acupuncture, there are many websites for information such as http://www.acupuncture.com/newsletters/m_apr05/main1.htm. Check with your veterinarian too. He or she should be able to provide a referral to a veterinary acupuncturist in your area. |

Unleashed by Petco TriBeCa Review by Miki Yoshiura and Mike Schoffel
GRR's president, Christine Johnson, received an e-mail from Natasha, the assistant manager of the Petco store in the TriBeCa section of Manhattan, where she explained that they have been collecting money through their Tree of Hope program and 50% of the donations would be given to GRR. Tree of Hope raises funds for animal shelters and rescue groups who help homeless pets find forever homes. Natasha also invited GRR to do a Meet and Greet regularly to promote greyhound adoption at her store.
We have done two Meet and Greets so far and a couple of applications have been filed as a result. Occasionally people on the street spotted ambassadog Shana with antlers through the windows and several came into the store to take pictures with the greyhound reindeer. Especially for a lady tourist and a mother with four children, the photo will remind them of the fun time they had with a funny looking greyhound and a holiday weekend in downtown NYC.

Unleashed by Petco in TriBeCa (Triangle-Below-Canal) is located near the new Freedom Tower rising above Ground Zero. This is a great location for GRR to spread the word about greyhound adoption. We hope you join us someday.

Goodbye 2011
As we say goodbye to 2011, we wanted to reflect on some memorable GRR moments from the past year:
 | |
Woodbury Walkathon |
 | |
Caitlyn's F.I.G.H.T Day in the Park, Putnam Valley |
 | |
Road Knights Show, Peekskill Riverfront |
 | |
Greenwich Knights of Columbus Flea Market |
 | | Petsmart Mohegan Lake, one of many Meet & Greets in 2011 |
 | | Freedom Run, 12 dogs now in their forever homes |
 | |
Montage of GRR dogs that attended the 2011 Picnic |
A few of the special needs dogs helped this year by GRR:
 | | Izzy aka Sally, now a healthy, happy member of the Panigrahi Family |
 | | Mocha aka Mashaka, one of our senior brood moms, fostered by Patty Murphy, adopted by Harvey Janes and living the good life |
 | | Squirt aka Shaula, found emaciated and near death in a Florida racing kennel in 2010. Has an adoption pending. |
 | | Rudy, born with a deformed leg that had to be amputated. GRR paid for his surgery in WV and brought him to NY. He's now a much loved member of the Ward family. |
In memoriam:
Many of us lost our beloved greyhounds in 2011. Below is a picture of Nessa who was brought to GRR but unfortunately died during her spay surgery. Even though she never made it to being anyone's pet, we want to remember her. Nessa was six years old and was a racer and brood mom to litters of pups born in 2009 and 2010. She is now running free at the bridge.

Thank you to all who help the hounds. We can't do this without your support. |
