Learn to Fly Day

Are you ready for take off?

Up you go into the wild blue yonder! Yes, you!

If you've always wanted to experience the world of flight but didn't know how to get started, you'll have a chance during the annual Learn to Fly Day at Smith Field Airport on Saturday, May 19.

Coming from a family of aviation enthusiasts (my husband and son are both pilots), I can say it gets in your blood to be high among the clouds, looking down on creation and the world you live in.

Learn to Fly Day is arranged by Chapter 2 of the Experimental Aircraft Association. "We want to give people the opportunity to know what it's like to fly in a small aircraft and think about becoming a pilot," said Joel Pierce, organizer of the event.

The event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. There is no cost to attend the event and look at the aviation displays. Complimentary food will be available. A 30-minute sample flying lesson in a 2-seater airplane is available for $59.00. A similar lesson in an aircraft that seats three people is $95.00.

Minors must have a release form signed by a parent. For more information, visit them online.

A-Row Aircraft Washing Area

A-Row Tenants are authorized to use the hose on the west side of the Ivy Tech Building to wash their aircraft.  A hose will be provided by the Airport Authority and placed in that area for your use.  Please be courteous to other tenants and Ivy Tech when using this area.  The washing area is first come first serve, however Ivy Tech personnel and students will take precedence while they are still leasing this facility.

New Electronic Gate Code

The A- Row electronic gate has been installed and is operational.  The code for this gate is different than our terminal gate.  If you have not obtained the code for the electronic gate please stop by the SMD Terminal Bldg to fill out a security acknowledgement form and obtain the new code.

This code will be the same code used on the terminal gate effective June 15th 2012 so whether you are an A-Row tenant or a tenant in Hangars 2, B, C, D, E, F, or G you will need to come in and obtain the new code.  We are notifying you of this in advance to make the transition as seamless as possible.

Restroom Access

We are aware that there are not any restrooms available to the A-Row tenants unless the Ivy Tech Facility is open, this is something that will be addressed when we relocate to the new building.  In the mean-time we ask that all tenants bare with us and continue to utilize the SMD Terminal Facilities.   Please remember that under no circumstances is it ok to drive your personal vehicle onto the airfield to get to the SMD Terminal, doing so puts your life and the life of other pilots at risk.  Please work with us to ensure the safety of our pilots and the Fort Wayne Community.

This has been an excellent year so far for both the Airport Authority and Sweet Aviation!  With any luck the weather will remain mild and we can continue this trend throughout the year. :)
