Chef Lauren Von Der PoolVegan and Raw Food Cuisine Expert Chef Lauren Von Der Pool recently took her crusade to fight childhood obesity to Peabody Elementary school.  Von Der Pool (pictured on the left in beige) showed 200 kindergartners how to make strawberry smoothies.  Click here for the recipe.

The chef also talked about the importance of smart food choices and how what the students eat affects them and the planet.

Von Der Pool's visit was part of the Farm-to-School Initiative, a program which teaches children the importance of eating fresh local farm foods.  She is currently lobbying Congress for healthier school lunch options.  Some Peabody Elementary students are pictured below enjoying her demonstration.

Clean your refrigerator coils -- You should do this twice a year to help keep your frig in top shape.  Just vacuum the condenser coils located underneath the refrigerator.  Use a long, nozzle vacuum attachment to do this.  I suggest more frequent cleanings if you have pets because pet hairs tend to pile up.  Your refrigerator will run more efficiently which will ultimately save you money.

Nutritional yeast -- You know something is good for you when it has the name "nutritional" in it.  This is a non-active yeast full of protein and vitamins.  I love it because it adds a wonderful nutty and cheesy flavor to dishes.  It comes in flakes and powder form.  I often add a little to salads, casseroles, soups and pasta. Sprinkle some on popcorn or garlic bread.  Nutritional yeast is available at health food stores.
