Special Money Saving Series:  Ways to help you hold on to your cash in this tough economy.

Meat department -- Most butchers markdown the prices of meats that are about to expire.  If you by the reduced cuts but don't plan to cook them by the expiration date, just freeze them until you are ready to use them.

Reader question -- Derrick from Washington, DC asks "Is there any truth to the old saying that you can't heat mayonnaise, or is it just an old practice passed down from your grandmother down south?"

Derrick, that's just a myth.  I cook with mayonnaise.  It's great in mac n' cheese.  Many bakers add it to cake and muffin batters.  Why?  Because mayonnaise's main ingredients are eggs, oil, salt and acid which add moisture and flavor.  I don't recommend leaving it or any perishable food out at room temperature for more than three to four hours.  Consuming that will probably make you sick.  Thanks for your question Derrick!

Safflower oil -- This healthy vegetable oil comes from the seeds of safflower plants which are related to sunflowers.  I use it in savory and sweet dishes like desserts, breads and salad dressings.  Safflower oil has no taste, color or odor, and it reportedly helps you lose fat around your belly.  You can also find it in some beauty products to help soften your skin.  Safflower oil is available at health food stores.

RunAmuck Mud Run results
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Covered in mud, Brian Reeve crossed the finish line in the RunAmuck Mud Run last weekend in Rockville, MD, finishing in 34 minutes.  See him pictured below where he is clean with his kids before the race and dirty afterwards.
Brian placed 67 out of more than 300 contestants who participated in the 5K (3.1 miles) race with challenges that included tire-runs, walking across a balance beam, climbing 3 and 4-feet high walls and doing the butterfly-swim technique across a mud pit.  Brian says the toughest part was going up and down hills the first few miles.  His family cheered him on, and his 9-year-old son Dyan (pictured above in red) wants to race with dad next year.
Now, Brian is preparing for more races.  Up next--the Warrior Dash that's scheduled to take place in Darlington, MD (just north of Baltimore) in September.  The 5k challenge is described as the "ultimate event for thrill-seeking athletes."  Brian says he can't wait to proudly wear the Warrior Helmet that he'll get for participating.
