Salt & Pepper Weekly News Special Correspondent Chef Lauren Von Der Pool
Spreads Earth Day message at HHS' Headquarters
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chef Lauren Von Der PoolVegan and Raw Food Cuisine Expert Lauren Von Der Pool was the featured chef earlier this week at the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Earth Day Expo in Washington, DC.  Earth Day is celebrated on April 22, 2010.  Von Der Pool (pictured on the right in yellow) educated the crowd on her passion for green living which started nearly 10 years ago when she was a teenager.
"I was the only kid in high school walking the halls with a large bottle of water and a bag of nuts," Von Der Pool recalled with a laugh.
The chef did a vegan cooking demonstration and handed out samples at the expo. On the menu--All the Way Live Stir Fry with Orange Chicken. Click here to get the recipe. Von Der Pool also talked about her new restaurant, Cafe Green, the first full-service, sit-down, organic, vegan eatery with a bar in DC. It's located at 1513 17th Street, NW.
Read the chef's Earth Day recycling tip in the Culinary Tips of the Week section that follows this story.
Introducing Special Money Saving Series:  Ways to help you hold on to your cash in this tough economy.
Part 1: Buy cheese blocks
-- I know cutting cheese can be a hassle, but it's worth it to save some dough. The next time you go grocery shopping, see how much more you spend for a block of cheese versus crumbles, slices or shredded pieces. When you calculate the difference, you won't complain about cutting this dairy product again.
Eat produce that's in season -- Even though most fruits and vegetables are available throughout the year at the grocery store, I highly recommend buying them fresh when they are in season, especially from your local farmers' markets.  The produce tastes better, is less expensive and more plentiful.  Click here to see what fruits and vegetables are in season in your state.
Earth Day is on April 22, 2010
-- In honor of this day, I have shared recycling tips during the past few weeks that help make you look beautiful. I am wrapping up my green tip series with the following tip that will help you beautify the environment.
Recycling tip part 3-- Make compost of out kitchen waste. Composting is the process of breaking down organic materials like yard waste and leftover foods. The resulting compost makes rich soil that is great for growing amazing vegetation. Produce and leaves make the best compost.
How do you get started? I suggest you buy a composting machine or take a class in your community. If you are in the Washington, DC metro area, I recommend calling the Wisdom Path Healing Center in Takoma Park, Maryland, at 301-891-2488. The center will teach you how to get started. It also sells composting equipment.
