Runs first half marathon for a cause

Home Cook Brian Reeve running in half marathon Home Cook Brian Reeve is pictured on the right racing 13.1 miles in last weekend's Yuengling Shamrock Half Marathon in Virginia Beach, VA.  After finishing in 2 hours, 14 minutes and 49 seconds, he boasted, "I ran all the way without stopping or walking.  Well, I did stop briefly to use the bathroom, but that's it."

Brian
was inspired to run and raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society after his friend was diagnosed with leukemia.

The winner finished in 1 hour, 4 minutes and 56 seconds.  Brian placed 3323 out of 6546 runners, and he is planning to run another half marathon this year.

Good eats for March Madness -- The NCAA tournament is underway.  Instead of ordering pizza to eat while watching the games, serve my easy Cheesy Pepperoni Pizza Bake with bread bites or tortilla chips.  It's pizza and dip rolled into one.  Click here for the recipe.  BTW--my pick, Kansas, lost, so I'm not really rooting for a team.

Salad dressing tip part 2:  how to help prevent the oil and vinegar from separating -- Add a little mustard (about a tablespoon for two cups of vinaigrette).  I suggest Dijon but any mustard will do.  This acts as an emulsifier, helping to keep the oil and vinegar together.  They will still separate a little because oil and vinegar do not mix, but the mustard helps tremendously and adds great flavor.

Eat chocolate without the guilt
-- How?  Eat cacao (aka raw chocolate).  Cacao is usually cooked and combined with dairy products and sugar which drastically reduces its health value, but in its raw form, chocolate is filled with nutrients, making it reportedly one of the top antioxidant foods.

I suggest mixing a cup of cacao powder (available at organic health food stores) with 1 1/2 cups of agave nectar to form a sweet chocolate syrup that tastes great drizzled on top of a sundae, pancakes, fruit or your favorite cake.

For great cacao bars, I recommend the ones sold at holecolife.com

Learn other ways to use raw chocolate in a class from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Sunday, March 28, 2010, at my new restaurant, Cafe Green, in Washington, DC.   The cost is $75 (includes tasting) or $95 (includes Cafe Green lunch).  Call 202-744-3651 to register.  Cafe Green (scheduled to officially open next month) is located at 1513 17th Street, NW in Dupont circle.
