Happy Thanksgiving from B. Smith Lifestyle expert, TV host, author and restaurateur
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here's a tip that always helps get me through the holidays.
Re-purpose less than perfect decorations--Whether it's spray painting old decorations or filling a vase with broken decorations, reuse the old before getting new. However, if you do want new, don't be afraid of the dollar store, resell shops and discount stores. There are great finds at the five and dime.
Remember, whatever you do, do it with style. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ B. Smith's third cookbook, B. Smith Cooks Southern Style, is available in stores and online. She will be signing it at her DC restaurant in Union Station on Thanksgiving Day from 1 to 3 p.m. Click on bsmith.com to purchase a copy.
The Very Best of B. Smith with Style will launch nationwide on PBS next year.
Culinary Tips of the Week
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Brian Reeve, home cook Hone your knife before carving that bird!--Remember to hone your straight-edge knives with a steel before using them and after washing them. Honing straightens out the edge of the blade. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Chef "Tee" Terrell Danley, restaurant owner/culinary instructor Do not stuff your turkey--Cook your turkey and stuffing separately, then insert the stuffing into the bird. Why? The inside of the turkey doesn't get hot enough to cook the stuffing completely and that could result in food poisoning. If you are adamant about stuffing your bird anyway, make sure the center of the turkey's internal temperature is 165 degrees F before serving. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Chef Lauren Von Der Pool, vegan/raw food cuisine expert Tofurky--This is a great alternative to turkey meat. My sweet citrus butter glaze makes it even better. Try the recipe below.
Learn more about Von Der Pool's exotic vegan and raw food cuisine at vonderpoolgourmet.com. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tofurky Sweet Citrus Butter Glaze Ingredients *1 cup fresh orange juice *1/4 cup agave nectar *1 Tbsp. onion powder *2 Tbsps. Earth Balance natural buttery spread *2 Tbsps. extra virgin coconut oil *A few sprigs of fresh rosemary *Pink Himalayan sea salt and pepper
Directions--add
orange juice, agave nectar, coconut oil, buttery spread, onion powder
into a small pot; cook over medium heat until mixture reduces down to a
glaze consistency; pour over Tofurky, bake according to the package
directions and enjoy. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Do you have a culinary question or tip to share? Email your questions and tips, along with your city and state, to drakeel@drakeelenterprises.com We will do our best to publish as many as we can. |
