Culinary Tips of the Week
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Brian Reeve, Home cook Reheating food--Here's a way to ensure that your leftovers heat up quickly in the oven. Let the dish sit out at room temperature for about 10 minutes. That will take off some of the chill, allowing the food to heat up faster. Sure, you can use the microwave, but food reheated in the oven always tastes better. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chef "Tee" Terrell Danley, restaurant owner/culinary instructor Herbs and spices--Add spices in the beginning of cooking when you are sautéing with oil because spices are fat soluble. Add herbs at the end of cooking when there is more moisture or liquid because herbs are water soluble. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chef Lauren Von Der Pool, vegan/raw food cuisine expert Kelp--This is a type of seaweed that is rich in essential vitamins and minerals. It contains iodine which is good for treating thyroid problems. Studies show that kelp is great for hair loss, obesity and ulcers. Other benefits include strengthening nails, blood vessels and brain functions. Eat it raw, sauté it or use it as a salt substitute in its dried, ground form. Kelp is available at most Asian markets and health food stores.
