A message from Barrett Canfield, President of South Coast Yachts
Happy New Year to everyone! I think you might welcome 2010 with open arms like we are after a very interesting and challenging 2009. I am grateful for the past year because we were able open up our new Beneteau dealership in San Diego and continue the tradition of good service to our San Diego, Orange County, and Arizona Beneteau owners who we've served for the last 10 years. We've been blessed with a wonderful Sales team of Mark Richards and Jay Bernstein, a great administrative leader in Yvonne Stern, and a responsive and professional service team with Kevin English, Beau Kinley, Nick Borbeau & and their teams. South Coast Service People make the difference and we are very fortunate to have this team to serve you!
Worldwide, Group Beneteau saw the bottom of the market in about June and then a nice healthy rebound in the Fall, which we witnessed in San Diego. Some of the 2009 milestones were.......
- Beneteau introduced the new First 35 (European Boat of the Year), First 40 (Sailing World Magazines Boat of the Year, "Best Crossover" and winner of the Sydney-Hobart race right out of the box) New Beneteau 50 (Arrives in April at South Coast) and new Beneteau 58.
- Beneteau USA introduces "Lean manufacturing" and "Just in time" inventory at the Marion, SC plant along with a new wood shop to get us boats and parts much faster.
- Beneteau USA receives NMMA CSI award for Best Initial Quality and is the only sailboat builder in the U.S. to receive a CSI award!
- Beneteau leads the world in sailboat sales over 30 feet and holds 30% of the U.S. market, which is almost twice the market share of the nearest competitor. (there's a reason that more people buy Beneteaus than any other brand)
South Coast Yachts found more wonderful Beneteau owners for all of our 2009 stock boats (except one) .....Interested? and the word on the docks in San Diego is that "The Beneteaus are selling"! I'm not surprised. I believe they are the best boats for our money available today. Our forecast is for good steady growth of the sailboat industry and for South Coast in 2010, thanks to you!
The remarkable communication avenue that we opened for South Coast Yachts in '09 is our Facebook Page Hopefully you're a "fan" already, but more people are looking to our SCY Facebook page for the latest sailing news and interesting Beneteau facts and stories than ever before. Amazing! Click to check it out!
On behalf of the South Coast Team, I thank you for your support and friendship and I look forward to seeing you sailing in 2010 and at the upcoming Sunroad San Diego Boat Show. We look forward to serving you.
Warm regards, Barrett Canfield Profile

Beneteau First 40 takes the overall win at Sydney-Hobart |

Over the past 64 years, the Rolex Sydney Hobart has become an icon of Australia's summer sport, ranking in public interest with such national events as the Melbourne Cup horse race, the Davis Cup tennis and the cricket tests between Australia and England. No yachting event in the world attracts such huge media coverage - except, of course, the America's Cup and the Volvo Ocean Race - than does the start on Sydney Harbour. And the others only happen every four or five years.
The Beneteau First 40 - "Two True" - The winner, Andrew Saies, presented with his award.
Latest press release from Beneteau USA
FIRST 40 WINS SYDNEY HOBART RACE
MARION, SC, JANUARY 6, 2010: Beneteau USA is pleased to announce that First 40s have taken first and second overall in the IRC Division of the 2009 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Race. The victory comes fresh off the announcement of Sailing World Magazine awarding the First 40 with its Boat of the Year Award for Best Crossover.
Andrew Saies's First 40 Two True finished first overall in a fleet of 77 boats sailing from Sydney, Australia to Hobart, Tasmania under the IRC rating system. Two True took first overall among the 33 boats racing in the ORCI Fleet, as well. Additionally, the First 40 Wicked, owned by Mark Welsh, finished less than an hour behind Two True on corrected time to claim second overall in the IRC Division. The two boats completed the 628 nautical mile course in just under four days. Saies, who had previously owned a First 40.7, was impressed with the new boat's performance.
"A great boat, this new Beneteau," said Saies. "It's a fast boat, we had a strong belief that this boat was going to rate well and do ok in this event."
The new First 40 made its U.S. debut at the United States Sailboat Show in Annapolis this past October, and was designed by Farr Yacht Design to replace the First 40.7, which also won the Sydney to Hobart race in 2003.

2002 Beneteau 47.7 - " Flying Shadow" $ 235,000
2002 Beneteau 47.7 - Flying Shadow is the best value for fast family cruising on the market! She was purchased new in France and sailed in the Med for two years and then in the 2004 ARC Rally across the Atlantic to the Caribbean by an adventurous family with two young kids aboard! She is very nicely equipped and in excellent condition. Her three cabin layout with pullman berth owner's cabin makes her very comfortable for live aboard or cruising with guests. The First 47.7 is known for her speed and could be a fun distance racing boat for you with potential double digits on the knotmeter. Fast, comfortable, reliable, and good looking are nice qualities to have!

Original owner, 1984 First 42, Frers Design, in remarkable condition. New bottom paint October 30th, 2009. (See pictures hauled out.) She is one of those gems that you see at a Yacht Club dock and wish she was for sale. All history, service records, and always kept in excellent condition and sailed regularly. Queen's B IV is ready to cruise and race, but she was NEVER raced hard, only light Wed. night races and local cruising club events. January Recipe - By Yvonne Stern |

January's easy recipe.
Try a 2007 Patz and Hall Napa Valley Chardonnay (incredibly good!) with these tasty tacos. For other perfect wine pairings please contact our friend Bob Gelman at the Grape Connection. Click on the link to view the Grape Connection website. Grape Connection
GRILLED-FISH TACOS 2 medium limes, quartered
1 small red onion, thinly sliced 1/2 cup chopped cilantro
1/2 small head red cabbage, thinly sliced
1 to 2 (6- to 8-ounce) firm-ripe avocados 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 pound (1-inch-thick) skinless mahimahi fillet 1/2 cup of plain greek yoghurt 1/4 cup of salsa verde (Trader Joe's has a great salsa verde)
12 (6-inch) corn tortillas
Shredded Cheese as desired (optional)
Whisk together yoghurt and salsa verde to make sauce. Thread each piece of fish onto a skewer, season with salt and pepper, Wrap exposed part of each skewer in heavy-duty foil to protect it from charring. Oil grill rack, then grill fish, turning once, until opaque and just cooked through, about 5 minutes total. If you sautee in frying pan, put olive oil in pan and sautee the fish until opaque, season with salt and pepper.
Wrap tortillas in 2 foil packages and warm on grill, turning once, about 3 minutes total. Halve, pit, and peel avocados, then cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices. Serve fish with tortillas, crema sauce, onions, and remaining toppings then squeeze fresh lime juice on top.
Enjoy!
