Today is the first day of our summer program at the Wesley House Community Center and what a great summer we have planned! Our summer program is all day Monday - Friday and includes fun activities like swimming, field trips, Music Appreciation Week and Professions Week. All of us - kids, staff and volunteers - are very excited!  For more information about how you can be involved and offer help with our summer program, see below.

Ruby Adkins and kids"I came to Wesley House in the 1930s"
We recently had a group of visitors from a Knoxville retirement home who were very special; the ladies brought hand-made gifts of necklaces for the girls at Wesley House and bracelets for the boys. One of the ladies, Ms. Ruby Owen Adkins, was a "Wesley House kid" for about five years in the 1930s. She talked with our kids about the cooking classes and Bible study she enjoyed here, as well as the chance to read books from our library. Her favorite activity here was sewing and she was very proud of the dress she made. She was
ten years old when she wore that new handing out jewelry - adkins visit
dress and sange in the Wesley
House Community Center choir
performance at Church Street
United Methodist Church; times
were hard but she was happy
with her world at the Wesley
House.  Our kids loved hearing
about how the Wesley House
was then as well as telling all
of the ladies about the Wesley
House of today.
How Can I Help?
With a full summer ahead of us, we surely need your help.  Ways you can be involved include:

Share your experiences with our kids
June 14-18 is Professions Week; come talk to the kids for about 20 minutes about your profession.  We want careers of all kinds represented, so we'd love to hear from you!

Provide lunch for our kids
We have 65 children a day at Wesley House during the summer; for some, lunch may be the largest meal of the day for them. Any help you can provide is appreciated.

Fresh fruit and milk
We also provide breakfast for the kids, and their favorite is cereal and fresh fruit.  We need a steady supply of apples, oranges, bananas, and grapes.  We also need milk for the cereal.

Gardening
We have two six foot plant beds prepped and ready to go - we just need the plants! This will provide a great project for our kids this summer.  We'd like to have flowers in one bed and vegetable plants (not seeds) for the second one.

Camp Wesley Woods Items
We have 13 children who will attend Camp Wesley Woods this summer.  There are some basic supplies each child needs, including a flashlight, bag for dirty clothes, sun screen, raincoat or poncho, water bottle, water shoes (not flip flops), and insect repellant.  You can drop these items off at Wesley House and we'll make sure kids headed to camp are packed with them!

If you can help with any of these needs, please contact us at 524-5494.
Don't forget to get your Cookbook!
The Wesley House cookbook, Fork and Spoon, cookbook cover
has more than 120 pages of recipes from
friends of Wesley House and is a sure way
to expand your cooking knowledge.  They
are a bargain at $10! To purchase, call us
at 524-5494 or come by.
