Wesley House Logo Greetings!

Welcome to THE BRIDGE, a monthly e-newsletter designed to keep your house updated on what's happening at our house!  Founded in 1907, Wesley House Community Center is the second oldest charity in Knoxville and to this day remains a beacon of hope to low-income families living in our inner city.  Together we can continue to achieve the very best for our urban communities.
Kids in the kitchen Let's Get Cooking
Wesley House is preparing a taste-tempting cookbook featuring favorite recipes from our donors, volunteers, United Methodist Women and friends.  Our cookbook will be beautifully illustrated and bound and is sure to be treasured for years.  We would like you to submit 3 or 4 of your favorite family recipes so you can be represented in our memorable collection.  For more information please visit our website or call our office at 524.5494.
A New look for WesleyHouse.com
We have redesigned our site to allow for easier access to our events and activities, more information on the programs we offer, and increased opportunities for supporters to stay informed and get involved.  New features you can explore today include -  Faces of Wesley House, a section where we will be sharing testimonies of our children and seniors and the impact Wesley House has had on them; our new student blog or our new photo gallery.  We will be adding new features and updates monthly so be sure and bookmark this new site so you can see what's new.
Homework time at Wesley House Academic Achievement
When it comes to Wesley House's CARES (Children After-school Recreation, Education and Support) program, it's hard to argue with success! With 73 percent of CARES students making the honor roll during their most recent grading period, the program is making an impact on children's lives, and some new elements of CARES are leading the way in enhancing students' academic performance.

Recently, CARES students chose three new "clubs" to join. The clubs - Art, Science & Tech, and Sports, provide students the chance to rotate through different topics that give them opportunities for creative expression, teamwork and building self-confidence.  The clubs have become very popular with CARES students.
WISE Member Thank Goodness for Fridays!
The W.I.S.E. (Wellness In Senior Education) program continues to grow with four new members this fall.  Our seniors kicked off a full schedule of fall activities with a lunch at Ci-Ci's Pizza, provided by First United Methodist in Knoxville.  In addition to local Methodist Women's groups serving hot meals each Friday, our seniors also receive special programs.  Programs include music, bible study, guest speakers, or a craft project.  More importantly, the seniors are given the opportunity to fellowship with neighbors and friends they normally may not see.

If you or your church would like to host a lunch next Spring or volunteer with our seniors, please contact our office at 865.524.5494 or e-mail sharon@wesleyhouse.com.
Volunteer and Wesley House Child One Hour a Week
Our children thrive when they receive one-on-one time with a volunteer. Grades, behavior, and self-esteem improve when kids know they are cared for by someone outside of their own family.  If you have one hour a week or bi-weekly that you could share, would you consider becoming a tutor at Wesley House?  No experience is needed. Contact our office at 865.524.5494 or e-mail sharon@wesleyhouse.com.

Listen Up!

"I can't wait to get to Wesley House today. I know they are going to have a great snack for us!"

This is what Miss Lizzie, a program counselor at Wesley House, heard Gabby, a 4th grader at Maynard Elementary, say when she picked up her students at school to bring them back to Wesley House.

Did you know that a gift of $50 provides a week's worth of snacks for Wesley House participants?
