Great Quotes
"Libraries are like a frosty glass of milk for the American soul - tasty, wholesome, mother-approved and more importantly, a necessary part of a healthy intellectual life."
~ Editorial, Georgetown Voice, 2005
"I always tell people that I became a writer not because I went to school but because my mother took me to the library. I wanted to become a writer so I could see my name in the card catalog."
~ Sandra Cisneros
"So where do you go to find a researcher who is intelligent, imaginative, skilled in the use of computers, devoted to discovering the truth, and knowledgeable about science, technology, history and literature, and who usually works for dirt and gets credit for nothing? After lunch I drove to the city library..."
~ James Lee Burke

As February rolls around, 2 holidays come to mind: Valentine's Day and President's Day. Valentine's Day has a long history, but today, we woo our sweethearts with candy, flowers, or other gifts. Check out the library's collection of classic love stories or modern romance novels (see Romantic Reads for Valentine's Day below). Also, next time you visit the library, buy some raffle tickets to win our beautiful Valentine's Day gift basket. Proceeds go to the Friends of the Library. President's Day is a celebration of the wonderful contributions of our first president, George Washington. Again, if you like biographies, check out the library's terrific books, DVD's, and audiobooks about George Washington and other presidents. Oh, and one more thing. This year, we are celebrating Somers Library's 30th year in the Park. Stay tuned and we'll fill you in with more details as we get closer to April!

Desperate Crossing: The Untold Story of the Mayflower. This History Channel documentary tells an important part of American history. It tells the story of English separatists sailing on the Mayflower, and the perilous journey they took to get to the new part of the world. The story is portrayed thru narratives; the acting makes you feel as if you are on the journey with them. The movie is approximately 140 minutes, and is well worth the viewing. |

Art Exhibit
|
A resident of Mahopac, James B. Sparks' paintings are created in oil and watercolor. He is interested in digital photography as well as painting and drawing. He has scheduled two art lectures at Somers Library this Spring.
The works in this show are deliberately diverse and chronologically jumbled to attest to a life designed around, actually immersed in, a love of looking and experiencing events as opportunities to memorialize through sketching. Whether in a two minute note taking gesture drawing or a labor intensive week long study, drawing is always for him a form of participation, of celebration, and finally, a pursuit of pleasure similar to his earliest childhood passions. |
