Did You Know...
May is Get Caught Reading Month?

Get Caught Reading
"Get Caught Reading is a nationwide campaign to remind people of all ages how much fun it is to read. Because of research indicating that early language experience actually stimulates a child's brain to grow and that reading to children gives them a huge advantage when they start school, we hope to encourage people of all ages to enjoy books and magazines and to share that pleasure with the young children in their lives."

Great Quotes

"Happy is he who has laid up in his youth, and held fast in all fortune, a genuine and passionate love of reading."  Rufus Choate

"It is no more necessary that a man should remember the different dinners and suppers which have made him healthy, than the different books which have made him wise. Let us see the results of good food in a strong body, and the results of great reading in a full and powerful mind."  Sydney Smith

"If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads."  Ralph Waldo Emerson

Inter-Library Loan - have you ever used it?  Ever heard of it?  Inter-Library loan means borrowing materials owned by other libraries in the Westchester Library System and beyond.  If you don't already take advantage of this service, you can easily place holds on items that are not readily available on Somers Library shelves by searching for the item(s) in the online catalog through the Library's website (www.somerslibrary.org) or by asking for help from a Reference Librarian.  Somers Library is one of the largest borrowers in Westchester (199,822 items in 2010, including renewals).  With the limited space and budget, Inter-Library Loan is a GREAT SERVICE and we love to offer it.  However, starting in 2011 and forward, please keep in mind that the Somers Library will be incrementally charged per item borrowed and/or renewed.  It is wonderful if you use this service.  We place holds on book club titles for 30+ book clubs!  However, if you order an item and later change your mind, please cancel the item before it is shipped out of the loaning library (again, a Librarian can help you with this).  This will aid us in controlling our ever-escalating costs so that we can deliver the best possible service to you, our customers!

Holiday Closings

Memorial Day

Somers Library will be CLOSED for the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend on Saturday May 28th, and on Monday May 30th.

Meet the Staff: Rosemary Schwabe

Rosemary SchwabeMy family and I moved to Somers from Guilderland, New York and I started working at the library as a part-time library clerk in March 1993. After taking the Civil Service Exam, I became a Senior Library Clerk, and then became a 'full-timer' and Head of the Technical Processing Department in 1997.

Through the years the job has evolved as technology advanced. What people don't realize is that the bulk of the items they see on the shelves (books, DVDs, periodicals, etc.) pass through the Technical Processing Department first. The job requires alot of attention to detail. Besides the linking and processing of items, I order State and Federal Income Tax forms which you see in the lobby of the library. When tax season is over I maintain the magazine exchange.

My most joyful times are spent with my two year old grandson Tyler. I'm an avid organic gardener growing flowers, herbs, and vegetables.

2011 has become a very special year for my family. My daughter Kim is getting married in May, and my son and his wife are expecting their second child in October.

Two classes at a time will walk over from Primrose to the Library where they will get a tour both upstairs and down and get acquainted with how they can find a book they can read themselves in the children's room. One favorite stop on the tour is the inside look at the outside book drop! Children who do not yet have a library card will receive their first card that day. Each child will check out a book and take it home in a brightly colored bag donated by the Friends of the Library.

Somers Library/4 Week Children's Acting Workshop

Theatre

Somers Library is proud to host a four week, Children's Theatre Workshop geared for those children who are interested in acting as well as those who just want to have fun.  The workshop will be held in the Somers Library Program Room on the following Saturdays:  May 21, June 4, June 11 10:30-12:30, and June 18 10:30-12:00.

All children between the ages of 9-14 are welcome to attend. No registration is required only an openness, a willingness, and a passion to learn the craft of acting in a supportive, nurturing, and secure environment. Children will partake in theatre games; learn improvisational techniques and gradually be introduced to the Stanislavski method.  All exercises are designed to help the student actor develop poise, self confidence and a sense of self on stage that will translate into the world at large. This program is led by Robin Bett Levenherz, a North Salem resident who has devoted her life to theatre.  She is a graduate of the renowned High School for the Performing Arts and is a protg of Herbert Berghof.  An appointed, inner city, drama school teacher, Robin holds a doctorate in theatre from NYU.
