September is Library Card Sign-Up Month?

Library Card
"This observance was launched in 1987 to meet the challenge of then Secretary of Education William J. Bennett who said, "Let's have a national campaign...every child should obtain a library card - and use it." Since then, thousands of public and school libraries join each fall in a national effort to ensure every child does just that." Chases Calendar of Events
Great Quotes

"My test of a good novel is dreading to begin the last chapter."
  ~ Thomas Helm

"Libraries never let us forget who we are, for their worth stands by the knowledge they keep and save for us."
 ~ Virginia Hamilton

Let books be your dining table,
And you shall be full of delights
Let them be your mattress
And you shall sleep restful nights.

Donations

You may or may not know that the Library accepts donations of books, DVDs, and CDs. Extra copies of titles help us to:

- replace worn library copies

- reduce the number of copies of popular titles that we need  to purchase

- raise money through the Friends sale carts

Currently, we have temporarily suspended adult donations, but only until donated items sell and we have more storage space!  Right now our Friends book sale carts are bursting at the seams, waiting for you to pick up a bargain.

We have long wait lists for the following books. If you have a hard copy in good condition of these or any books published in 2010, please consider donating to the Library and share a good read with your neighbors:

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larsson

The Rembrandt Affair by Daniel Silva

Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCan

The Lion by Nelson DeMille

Innocent by Scott Turow

Remember too, that the Friends of the Somers Library accepts cash donations. The Friends is a 501(c)3 organization, so all donations are fully tax deductible by law. All money raised by the Friends is used to support exciting library programs, express copies of new books, furniture, items for the children's room, etc.

I want to thank everyone who participated in our very first summer raffle!  Congratulations to all our winners.  A special thank-you to our sponsors, including Joe Schiavone for the pedal car; SONY Corp, John Scarcella and Fausta McDermott for the SONY e-reader; Grand Prix New York for the racing tickets, 7 Stars Restaurant for the gift certificate, and the McDermott Family for the World Series key chain and Yankee Stadium pin. We raised over $1,000 which will be used to replace broken chairs in the Jean Reidy Children's Room! Pictured is Children's Librarian Betsy Bishop with Suzanne Shea -  winner of the pedal car.

I also want to recognize the librarians Betsy and Vicki for running a wonderful children's summer reading program, Jamie for continuing summer teen programs, and Val for running the adult book bingo.  Please join me in thanking our sponsors for their support, including Cold Stone, Chili's, Bistro19, Somers Colonial Shop, and Grand Prix New York.

Meet Our Staff: Valerie Herman, Reference Librarian

What's the best thing about being a librarian? Our Reference Librarian Valerie Herman thinks that the best thing about her job is developing a relationship with our patrons, responding to their interests, and creating a community in the library where patrons feel welcome.

Val listens to patrons and responds by buying books that reflect their interests. For example, if a patron is interested in sailing and Val sees that what we have is outdated or unappealing she will order a new book or two on the subject. And of course there are hundreds of books on the topic so deciding which one to buy can be a challenge. To make that decision, Valerie pores over the professional journals reading the opinions of reviewers who have digested the thousands of new books that are published each year.

Most recently, Val has been building up our collection of cookbooks, especially recipes and techniques from foreign countries, which she feels reflects the tastes of our patrons. Also, watch for a collection of Wilton Decorative Cake Pans to begin circulating in September!

Keeping up-to-date is a challenge not only for the books we buy but also the technologies. Val keeps up our presence on the Web via Twitter, Facebook, and Flickr, and maintains a wide-ranging collection of useful websites on de.licio.us. If you're not familiar with this, give it a click from our website. Val is also on the "Librarians Best Web Picks" committee at the Westchester Library System.

Val arranges for programs at the Library that she thinks would interest our patrons. Arranging the programs, creating and posting flyers, updating the media, editing our own newsletter and website are all ways Val keeps in touch with and helps nurture a sense of community in the library.

Being a librarian at Somers in Val's view is as much about the people as it is about the books. So be sure to stop at the information desk and introduce yourself!

Art Exhibits at the Library

Art ExhibitsSeptember. Paintings by Jim Sparks. Jim's work is grounded in observation of the organic and bustling world of vines, leaves, trees, and moss. What often passes for casual, peripheral vegetation in a larger context of 'landscape painting' is made the focus of studies that with layers of detail, patterns, and tactile qualities occupy center stage in paintings that often take months to complete. It is the transformation of the ordinary into the sublime that keeps Jim's inspirational level at a youthful feverish exuberance.

Recently, our listening center's CD player quit working.  A new one was quickly procured for us through the generosity of  Christine Robbins and the Somers Democratic Town Committee.  That inspired us to look over our CD collection and weed out some unused CDs, replace broken jewel cases, and ultimately purchase about 20 new, lively CDs just for kids. If you want to perk up your next trip in the car to do errands, check out some of our selections; they'll be guaranteed to lift your spirits!
