Great Quotes
"Everything you need for better
future & success has already been written. And guess what? All you
have to do is go to the library." ~ Jim Rohn
"Libraries are magical places.
There's
nothing quite like strolling the hushed aisles, letting your eye rove
along
dimly lit shelves. Each spine, each title, seems to beckon with a
promise
of incredible wonders, surprises, and adventures."
~ John Jakes
"No possession can surpass, or even equal a good library, to the lover of books. Here are treasured up for his daily use and delectation, riches which increase by being consumed, and pleasures that never cloy." ~ John Alfred Landford |

Somers Library Newsletter Books, Music, Movies and Information July 2010
|
|
Director's Corner | Starting with this issue, we will highlight an individual staff member, and...since there has been some interest in what a director does, I will start. The director is responsible for:
- hiring, promotion, and termination of staff;
- scheduling, supervising and training staff;
- writing staff evaluations on at least an annual basis;
- assessing staff needs and presenting recommendations to the library board;
- preparing financial reports and monthly status reports for the board;
- preparing an annual budget and presenting to the library and Town boards;
- implementing the adopted budget;
- assessing building and equipment needs and making recommendations to the library and Town boards (think leaky roofs, broken toilets, and outdated boilers!);
- keeping statistics and preparing the NYS library annual report;
- managing use of the public program room and exhibit gallery;
- applying for private and governmental grants and gifts (think leaky roofs, broken toilets, and outdated boilers!);
- making policy change recommendations to the library board;
- representing the library at professional meetings and conferences;
- supervising public relations, publicity, and library programs for community residents;
- dealing with miscellaneous daily issues.
All of the above is made more challenging in today's economic climate of static/shrinking budgets and rising costs. However, the library staff and I are still committed to providing the Somers community with the best service possible! Thank you for your support.
