July is National Grilling Month ?

Grilling

Whether it's hot and spicy or simple and sweet, celebrate your freedom to cook outside this month with a creative and exciting barbecue or grill experience." Chases Calendar of Events
Great Quotes
"Everything you need for better future & success has already been written. And guess what? All you have to do is go to the library."  ~ Jim Rohn

"Libraries are magical places. There's nothing quite like strolling the hushed aisles, letting your eye rove along dimly lit shelves. Each spine, each title, seems to beckon with a promise of incredible wonders, surprises, and adventures."
 ~ John Jakes

"No possession can surpass, or even equal a good library, to the lover of books. Here are treasured up for his daily use and delectation, riches which increase by being consumed, and pleasures that never cloy." ~ John Alfred Landford

Director's Corner
Pat MillerStarting with this issue, we will highlight an individual staff member, and...since there has been some interest in what a director does, I will start.  The director is responsible for:
  • hiring, promotion, and termination of staff;
  • scheduling, supervising and training staff;
  • writing staff evaluations on at least an annual basis;
  • assessing staff needs and presenting recommendations to the library board;
  • preparing financial reports and monthly status reports for the board;
  • preparing an annual budget and presenting to the library and Town boards;
  • implementing the adopted budget;
  • assessing building and equipment needs and making recommendations to the library and Town boards (think leaky roofs, broken toilets, and outdated boilers!);
  • keeping statistics and preparing the NYS library annual report;
  • managing use of the public program room and exhibit gallery;
  • applying for private and governmental grants and gifts (think leaky roofs, broken toilets, and outdated boilers!);
  • making policy change recommendations to the library board;
  • representing the library at professional meetings and conferences;
  • supervising public relations, publicity, and library programs for community residents;
  • dealing with miscellaneous daily issues.
All of the above is made more challenging in today's economic climate of static/shrinking budgets and rising costs.  However, the library staff and I are still committed to providing the Somers community with the best service possible!  Thank you for your support.

Web 2.0 for Music Lovers

Recently we took a look at Web 2.0 sites for readers; this month we are focusing on sites of interest to music lovers.

Pandora RadioPandora
With Pandora you can explore a vast trove of music to your heart's content. Just drop the name of one of your favorite songs or artists into Pandora and let the Genome Project go. It quickly scans its entire world of analyzed music to find songs with interesting musical similarities to your choice.

lastfmlast.fm
No matter what your tastes are in music, you will  find something to listen to on this site. Pick any song or artist from a wide range of genres, from classical to hip-hop. In addition to the large selection of audio files to explore, there are also areas for video, music news, event updates and bios of the artists. Save lists of favorite artists, or join discussions in the forums. Search for new music by using the find similar artists search or browse the charts and other topics/what's hot lists.

musicemissionsmusicemissions
Indie music fans will love this site which lets listeners review both new and "classic" indie artists. Genres featured on the site include pop, rock, alternative, folk and world music; there is plenty of variety. Search by artist or just browse the list of recent reviews, 5 star reviews or new releases.

purevolumepurevolume
Website for the discovery and promotion of new music and emerging artists. Each artist has a profile that typically contains basic info, updates, photos, shows and music for streaming. Artists have the option of making each of their songs available for free download. Listeners and fans can also create profiles to interact with artists and each other, as well as track and share music they like.

stereomoodsterreomood
Stereomood is a free emotional internet radio that suggests the music that best suits your mood and your daily activities. It's much more than an online radio, it's a tool to create playlists for every occasion, a tool to share your emotions through the music.
