Land Trust Day Update

 Mast Store logo

On Saturday June 4th, Mast General Store held it's annual Land Trust Day. CLT was selected as the local Land Trust for the new Columbia store.

We wish to thank our many Members and Volunteers for coming out and doing all that shopping! 20% of the day's sales have been donated to CLT in support of our mission, promoting voluntary conservation of scenic lands, open spaces, farms, forests, natural areas and significant habitats in central South Carolina.

We look forward to working with Mast General Store again next year, Land Trust Day is held the first Saturday in June each year.

September 24th Granite Hill

We are fortunate in being able to visit "Granite Hill" a 400 acre tract and recent CLT conservation easement property in Fairfield County owned by Moffatt Burriss of Columbia. Moffatt has devoted many years in developing this property to its maximum "wildlife potential." It features beautiful rolling terrain with a variety of habitat types including mature upland hardwoods, bottomland hardwoods, thinned pine stands, mixed pine-hardwoods, wildlife openings and food plots, one mile of creek bottom and forested wetlands along Robinson Branch and Mill Creek, headwater seepage springs, wetland wildlife impoundments, farm ponds and marshes, all supporting abundant and healthy wildlife populations.

The Property also has significant historical value with nearly a mile of the old Rockton and Rion Railroad running through it. The cover of CLT's 2011 Outlook featured a beautiful stone bridge from this rail line. The Anderson Quarry is nearby that mined the famous Winnsboro blue granite that went into many structures of national significance such as the famous Flatiron Building in New York.  There are also two tenant homes on the property constructed of blue granite in the 1930s to house quarry workers.

Our very own John Cely will be back in the woods with us for this event!

Land Protection Update

We are currently working on 9 conservation easements totaling 3,700 acres of which 700 acres are in the COWASEE Basin Focus area. We expect that all of these easements will close by the end of this year.  With the enhanced tax incentives scheduled to expire at the end of this year, we anticipate working on even more easements this year.

If you would like to find out more, please contact John Cely our Land Protection Director.
