Lake County Needs Volunteers!

Are you interested in volunteering to serve on a government board?

When citizens participate in government, it enhances transparency, openness, as well as effectiveness because government officials benefit from citizens' input, perspective, and expertise. The Lake County Board is seeking volunteers to appoint to various boards, agencies, and commissions. Residents can now visit one page on the County's website to search county board appointed committees/boards/agencies, check eligibility, see if there is a vacancy, and apply online.  Information about each committee, including term, composition, compensation, and contact information is also available on the site. Visit the appointments page for more information, or call the Lake County Board office at 847.377.2257.

Spring Trail Alerts

Although spring brings warmer trail-going weather, it also brings increased rainfall, putting forest preserve trails at greater risk for flooding. After submerged sections dry, maintenance crews are quick to regrade and repair any water damage. For the latest trail closings, visit LCFPD.org or "like" the Lake County Forest Preserves at facebook.com/LCFPD.

Playgrounds in Nature

A trip to the playground is an ideal opportunity for parents to connect with their children. Treat your kids to some fun, fresh air and exercise at one of eight Forest Preserve playgrounds. These innovative natural play environments provide a challenging experience for all ages and the highest level of accessibility. Take a spin on the slide, then go exploring in the preserve. Preserves and play areas are open daily from 6:30 a.m. to sunset.

Celebrate Earth Week

Join the Lake County Forest Preserves for a free week of nature programs in honor of Earth Week (April 22). Celebrate spring, learn about ecology, join a nature walk or lend a hand to help save the planet. All programs are free and open to all ages.

Picnic Season Underway

It's never too early to plan some summer fun, especially if you're in charge of the annual picnic for your family, company or club. This year, have your picnic at a Forest Preserve shelter. Permits provide exclusive access to a secluded shelter with ample parking, water, grills and more. For details, call 847-367-6640, or visit LCFPD.org/permits.

If You Can't Tear It, Don't Flush It!
Cloth-like Products Can Clog Sewer Systems
Some local water sanitation districts are experiencing problems in the sewer system due to cloth-like products being flushed down toilets.  Help keep your drains trouble-free! Do not flush baby wipes, disposable sweeper pads ("Swiffers", etc.), disinfecting wipes, or other cloth-like products down the toilet.  These products do not break down and result in the clogging of the sewer system.  For more info, contact your local sanitary district.
Lake County Among 10 Healthiest Counties in Illinois
Lake County ranks ninth out of 102 counties in Illinois according to a public health report card ranking the health of America's counties. This is the third consecutive year that Lake County is among the top 10 healthiest counties in the state. The report, developed by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, measures several factors, including length of life, quality of life, clinical care, health behaviors, socio/economic factors and physical environment. The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center noted that the report's assessment was very much in line with a local community-led strategic planning process underway, which recognizes adult obesity as an area of concern. The Health Department launched an obesity prevention conversation two years ago and is working with the community on a strategy to reduce the rate. For more information on the report, visit www.countyhealthrankings.org. For for more information on the local strategic planning process known as MAPP, click here.
