In the civilian camps and Civil War shops, visitors can meet blacksmiths, quilters, tin smiths and other historical figures from the era. In the military camps re-enactors bring to life activities such as pay day, weapon checks, mail call and drills. The event culminates each day with a narrated battle reenactment, Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. These one-hour battles feature artillery, cavalry and infantry re-enactors.

While exploring the grounds visitors can also meet historical figures including Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth and Generals Lee, Jackson, Custer, Grant and Sherman. Kids can enjoy special period crafts and games, and complete a scavenger hunt around the site.

Visitors can also experience a recreation of the 1863 Agricultural Fair, which features public amusements and horticultural and domestic arts exhibitions. NEW LAKE COUNTY DISTRICTS

Board Approves New District Map

The Lake County Board approved a new district map that reduces the size of the board from 23 to 21 members. The map will take effect in December 2012, when the terms of office for the current members expire, and a new slate of board members is elected. County boards are required to redraw district lines so that each direct has equal population, according to federal and state laws.

District 19 will no longer serve Hawthorn Woods under the new mapping but will pick up the Village of Deer Park and portions of Barrington. To view the existing map as well as the new map please click on the link below.
