Included in this e-newsletter are some helpful suggestions and links to things you and your family should know during our stormy season. Don't wait until the event is happening to figure out how to protect yourself. Taking the time to educate yourself now could very well keep you and your loved ones out of harms way during a major storm.

You'll also note that our Lake Zurich Fire Protection District Chief Terry Mastandrea is retiring on July 15th. I've had the privilege of knowing and working with "Chief Terry" for many years (that's me with him in the photo below---I'm on the right and former L.Z. Trustee Steve Callahan is on the left). Chief Mastandrea is an outstanding individual and we all are safer because of the job he's done for us over the last 21 years. I encourage you to come to his Walk Out "Last Tone Out" ceremony on July 15th. I'm sure you'll find it a truly moving experience and it will also give you the opportunity to thank Chief Terry for a job well done!

Please forward this e-newsletter to anyone you feel may benefit from its content. By helping me get the word out in this manner you're also helping me GO GREEN! Thank you!!

If you've gotten this letter from a friend, please join my email list at the bottom of this page to receive future issues.

SUMMER STORM SEASON

It's Summer Storm Season - Be Prepared

Summertime can bring potentially dangerous thunderstorms and tornados to our area. During any storm, listen to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio to stay informed about watches and warnings. Communities have different ways of warning residents about tornados, with many having sirens, so you should be familiar with your community's warning system. If there is a warning, pick a safe room in your home where household members and pets may gather during a tornado. This should be a basement, storm cellar or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows. You can also get prepared for high winds by removing diseased and damaged limbs from trees, moving or securing lawn furniture, trash cans, hanging plants or anything else that can be picked up by the wind and become a projectile.

Also, be familiar with these terms:

Tornado Watch

Tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area. Review and discuss your emergency plans, and check supplies and your safe room. Be ready to act quickly if a warning is issued or you suspect a tornado is approaching. Acting early helps to save lives!

Tornado Warning

A tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. Tornado warnings indicate imminent danger to life and property. Go immediately under ground to a basement, storm cellar or an interior room (closet, hallway or bathroom).

Power Outage

Sudden power outages can be frustrating and troublesome, especially when they last a long time. If a power outage is two hours or less, you need not be concerned about losing your perishable foods. For prolonged power outages, though, there are steps you can take to minimize food loss and to keep all members of your household as comfortable as possible. Get food and water safety information here:

Have a Plan

It's very important for families to be prepared before disaster strikes. To learn more about creating an emergency plan and a disaster supply kit, visit

NEW LAKE COUNTY DISTRICTS

Board Approves New District Map

The Lake County Board approved a new district map that reduces the size of the board from 23 to 21 members. The map will take effect in December 2012, when the terms of office for the current members expire, and a new slate of board members is elected. County boards are required to redraw district lines so that each direct has equal population, according to federal and state laws.

District 19 will no longer serve Hawthorn Woods under the new mapping but will pick up the Village of Deer Park and portions of Barrington. To view the existing map as well as the new map please click on the link below.
