EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT INFORMATION

WEEKEND SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR LAKE COUNTY

Lake County Emergency Management just participated in a conference call with the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office, regarding the possibility of severe weather this coming weekend affecting Lake County and surrounding areas.

According to NWS forecasters, the combination of a slow-moving warm front approaching from the south and an extremely vigorous storm system now over the Pacific coast will likely lead to a large area of potentially disastrous severe weather Sunday evening through Monday morning (April 10-11). As the warm front approaches the Lake County area Saturday night into Sunday, some storm activity is possible. During the day Sunday, strong winds from the southwest will bring near-record warm temperatures and high humidity, with highs near or above 80 degrees. Current forecast models suggest that a layer of very warm air above the surface will inhibit development of severe storms during the day on Sunday, but as that upper level warm-air "cap" erodes, storms are expected to develop quickly.

While forecasts are likely to change between now and Sunday, the NWS personnel described the expected scenario as "explosive development of severe thunderstorms, including supercell storms, late Sunday afternoon" over northwestern Illinois, northeastern Iowa, and southwestern Wisconsin. Those storms are then forecast to move rapidly eastward into our area. With very strong winds from different directions at different elevations in the atmosphere, solar heating of the ground, and abundant moisture, the conditions over much of the central part of the country will be favorable for development of severe storm activity. Because of the specific combination of expected conditions, NWS forecasters suggest that the risk of significant severe weather, including severe thunderstorms and possible tornados, will continue through the night Sunday into Monday morning.

We strongly encourage all Lake County residents and businesses to review their severe weather plans. We also join the National Weather Service in reminding people of the importance of being prepared to receive emergency messages, particularly during the overnight hours, by using a NOAA all-hazards alerting weather radio. These radios can be programmed to monitor a specific radio channel and activate an alarm when warnings are issues for any specific county. Alerting weather radios are one of the most effective ways of knowing about imminent severe weather before it strikes your community. More information about weather radios can be found at the NWS website: http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lot/?n=nwra

Please pay attention to the evolving weather forecast over the weekend, and be prepared to take any necessary preparedness actions should severe weather develop.
