PUBLIC OUTREACH TO HELP SENIORS FILE HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION |
Lake County property owners who are 65 years or older and have a household income less than $55,000 may qualify for the Senior Citizen Assessment Freeze. The property must have been the primary residence from Jan. 1, 2010 through Jan. 1, 2011. This homestead exemption freezes the assessed valuation that appears on the tax bill, not the tax rate.
The Chief County Assessment Office recently mailed applications to those seniors that currently receive the Senior Citizen Homestead Exemption. There will be 14 public outreach sessions across the county in April and May for residents to get on-on-one assistance completing the forms.
The meetings are hosted by the Chief County Assessment Office and the Lake County Township Assessors Association.
Lake Villa Township West (Formerly Gavin School) will be held on April 13, 2011 at 9:00 - 10:00 a.m., 37850 North Route 59, Lake Villa, Illinois 60046. Here for more locations/dates/time.
For more information, contact the Chief County Assessment Office at 847.377.2050 or visit www.lakecountyil.gov/assessor.
Please note: Residents should bring copies of income received such as their 2010 Federal Income Tax Form and Social Security Statement. Also, If the property is owned in Trust, you may need to provide proof of the beneficiary.

MOBILE TELEPHONE BAN |
CITY OF WAUKEGAN ORDINANCE
Many Lake County residents drive throughout the City of Waukegan routinely for either personal or County related business. Please be advised that Waukegan recently passed an ordinance banning the use of mobile telephones while operating a motor vehicle within Waukegan city limits.
There are exceptions for using a hands-free device, calling for emergency assistance and using a mobile phone while stationary and parked in a motor vehicle. Individuals in violation of this ordinance are subject to fines of $50.00 per infraction and an additional fine of up to a $200.00 if the violation occurs at the time of a traffic accident. Please drive responsible! |
USED MOTOR OIL and AUTO CHEMICALS |
PROPER DISPOSAL OF AUTO FLUID WASTE
Residents may drop off old MOTOR OIL at Lake Zurich's Public Works facility, located at 505 Telser Road (847.540.1696). It's open to Lake County residents ONLY, 24 hours a day, seven days a week (no business waste, and no household chemical waste). Residents place their container of motor oil in the yellow shed. Lake Zurich staff then takes the container around back and empty the contents into storage tanks awaiting removal via an oil reclamation company. Auto Zone stores have indicated that they will accept a variety of automotive chemicals (such as motor oil, antifreeze and transmission fluid) for disposal. Check your local phone book for locations near you and call ahead to verify that disposal is an option. Other oil-change businesses (e.g. Jiffy Lube and Lube Pro's) sometimes accept used motor oil (check your local phone book for a location near you). |
SCAM WATCH |
ComEd WARNS OF SCAM
In 2010, ComEd saw nearly a 60 percent increase in cases involving con artists impersonating ComEd workers compared to the previous year, with nearly half of the reported cases occurring in the spring. ComEd reports scammers used a variety of tactics to lure customers into handing over money and letting them inside their home. Customers have reported losing as much as $7,000 from scammers.
In many of the reported cases, the thieves identified themselves as a worker from the local utility company. Thieves have worn clothing to dress the part, such as a hard hat, items bearing a utility company logo, or a generic orange safety vest. In some instances, the culprits executed the scam in plain clothes.
