WATER CONSERVATION

Lake County Calls Attention to Water Conservation during Ground Water Awareness Week

Ground Water Awareness Week spotlights one of the world's most important resources - groundwater. What is groundwater? It's rain water and other precipitation that soaks into the soil and makes its way to shallow and deep aquifers. About 30% of Lake County residents, mostly in the northern and western portion of the county, rely on groundwater for their source of water. The other 70% use Lake Michigan water. Due to significant population growth, the demand for water continues to increase, depleting the groundwater supply and creating potentially serious shortages. Therefore, we need to conserve water so that this vital resource is available today, and for generations to come. To learn more about how Lake County is planning for our future water supply and ways you can conserve water, visit

RAINBOW TROUT SEASON

Rainbow trout fishing opens, Saturday, April 2

Lakewood Forest Preserve in Wauconda will open for rainbow trout fishing on Saturday, April 2, following the release of roughly 600 pounds of trout in Banana Lake. Most of the trout range in size from three-quarters to one pound. The trout stocking is a biannual fall and spring event at the 3.2-acre Banana Lake. Daily creel limit is five. The deepest point in Banana Lake is 25 feet.

Fishing in the Lake County Forest Preserves is FREE. Anglers ages 16 and over must have an Illinois fishing license. Trout fishermen must also have an Illinois inland trout stamp. Proceeds from the sale of the stamps help fund the stocking program.

Fishing Lakewood

Lakewood features four additional lakes, including: 8-acre Taylor Lake with maximum depth of 20 feet; 5-acre Beaver Lake with maximum depth of 10 feet; 2-acre Acorn Pond with maximum depth of 14 feet; and 4-acre Heron Pond with maximum depth of 5 feet. All contain largemouth bass, bluegill and channel catfish. Black crappie, green and pumpkinseed sunfish, and golden shiners are present in some of the ponds.

LAKE COUNTY DISCOVERY MUSEUM

Civil War High Tech - Discovery Museum

Exhibit exploring the role of technology in the American Civil War opened February 5.

Discover how technological advances influenced the American Civil War in Civil War High Tech, the Lake County Discovery Museum's newest original exhibition. Learn about submarines, reconnaissance balloons, ironclad ships, railroads and other technology in this interactive exhibit, on display in Wauconda, Illinois from February 5 to August 21, 2011.

Civil War High Tech explores how the American Civil War influenced technology at the time, and how technology helped the Union win the war. The exhibit focuses on a variety of technologies, including repeating firearms, ironclad ships, reconnaissance balloons, telegraphs, submarines and railroads. Hands-on activities throughout the exhibition help illustrate the mechanics and advantages of these technologies.

 CivilWarSoldiers

Climb inside a re-creation of the Confederate submarine, H.L. Hunley, to learn about the first successful submarine attack. Peer out the turret of the USS Monitor, the first ironclad, and learn how new ship designs revolutionized the navy. Step into the basket of a reconnaissance balloon and see how this new vantage point changed tactics for Civil War commanders. Move supplies and troops on our interactive railroad table to see firsthand how railroads changed the pace and strategies of war. Build a circuit to learn how telegraphs work, and discover how they greatly increased the speed at which information was transmitted during the war.

A variety of period items from the museum's collection are featured throughout the exhibit, including a Gatling gun, Civil War binoculars, an 1861 Lake County map, a Navy uniform, railroad related items, a fragment of a cannon ball from the Battle of Bull Run, assorted rifles and a cannon.
