DENTAL DISCOUNT PROGRAM

NacoLake County Announces New Dental Discount Card Program for Lake County Residents

A new dental discount card program is now available that will help Lake County residents save money on their dental service expenses. The NACo Dental Discount Card Program, provided by the National Association of Counties (NACo) in partnership with Careington International Corporation, can help Lake County residents save up to 50 percent on their dental care services, and 20 percent on orthodontic services. Individuals or families may opt to pay for a monthly or yearly membership. The cost for a yearly individual membership is $59 and $69 for families. More than 200 providers in Lake County are participating in this program. Discount card holders will receive significant savings from these providers on dental cleanings, x-rays, braces, dentures, crowns, root canals and more. This plan is not insurance.

"Too many adults neglect their oral health because they simply cannot afford to pay for dental care," said Irene Pierce, the Lake County Health Department's Executive Director. "Dental disease can affect one's overall health, that's why it's important to visit a dentist regularly. This program is user friendly, will save people money and most importantly, will increase access to oral health care."

Cardholders can simply schedule an appointment with a participating dentist or specialist and present their card to receive a discount at the time of service. There are no forms to complete and everyone in the household is eligible to receive a discount with a family membership. The NACo Dental Discount Card Program is designed to complement health insurance plans or work in conjunction with health savings accounts, flexible spending accounts and health reimbursement arrangements.

To sign up for the Dental Discount Card Program, residents can download a registration form at: www.nacodentalprogram.com.  A list of participating providers and more information is available.

SENIOR DEFERRAL REGISTRATION

The 2010 tax year Senior Deferral registration begins in January

Illinois residents who are at least 65 years of age (as of June 1), who have resided in Illinois for at least three years and have a total household income of $50,000 or less, can apply for the state loan that charges 6% simple interest per year.

· Must be primary residence
· Loan must be paid back at the time of sale, if refinanced, or one year from the date of death
· If a mortgage company is involved, the mortgage company must sign off

· Total taxes plus interest can not exceed 80% of the value of the home

Applications must be completed and returned by February 25, 2011. Visit the Treasurer's Office website or call 847.377.2323.

TAX SALE

Tax Sale Begins
Monday, November 29

This year's tax sale occurs on Monday and Tuesday, November 29-30 at the Greenbelt Cultural Center, 1215 Green Bay Road. Both days start at 9:00 a.m.; Monday will go until 5:00 p.m., Tuesday until all taxes are sold.

By state law, any taxes that remain unpaid go to a tax sale toward the end of the year. This means that registered tax buyers bid to pay the tax balance and receive an unrecorded lien on the property. The longer that lien goes unpaid, the more penalties get added, and eventually the tax buyer has the option of petitioning the Circuit Court for the deed to the property.

In order to have avoided having your taxes sold, they must have been paid in full by Wednesday, November 24 in the County Treasurer's Office.

HOLIDAY RECYCLING PROGRAM

SWALCO Announces 2010 Holiday Green Guide and Holiday Light Recycling Program

Between Thanksgiving and New Year's, Americans throw away an estimated 5 million+ tons of extra garbage. An important part of SWALCO's mission is to help educate the community about the 4Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle an buy recycled) and to share information and ideas that will help support them. With that mission in mind, SWALCO's Public Information Officer, Merleanne Rampale, has written a Green Holiday Guide and put together some fun and interesting suggestions for turning your holidays a little greener this year, including a few of her favorite green gift picks this year and favorite green cleaning recipes. You'll find loads of ideas to help you celebrate in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly fashion, unique green gift suggestions, eco-friendly decorating and entertaining ideas, as well as helpful information and resources.

The guide also notes a number of SWALCO programs and services, including their Electronics Recycling Collections held at various locations around the county.

This year, through January 31, 2011, the Agency will also collect and recycle unwanted or broken Holiday Lights (incandescents & LEDs) and extension cords, free of charge at any of their electronics Recycling Collections and other sites as listed on the website.

Please visit their website at www.swalco.org to find this Guide and other publications, collection event dates and locations, more about their programs and services, and other related information.

LAKE COUNTY PERMITTING

New Fee Schedule

On Tuesday, November 16, 2010 the Lake County Board approved an update to the March 2009 Land Development Fee Schedule.
Visit www.lakecountyil.gov/planning or call the Central Permit Facility for more information at 847-377-2600. The fee schedule goes into effect December 1, 2010. Complete applications received before then will be reviewed under the current fee schedule.

Permitting Registrations
In the effort to simplify the permitting process while maintaining safety for our residential customers, as of December 1, several residential improvements may require only a registration with the office rather than a full permit, if certain conditions are met. These improvements include: residential sheds and other storage structures with a floor area of 100 sq. ft. or less; re-roofs (not involving structural work) performed by Illinois licensed roofers to existing residential structures; re-siding of existing residential structures; re-siding of existing residential structures; and fence installation on perimeters of parcels zoned or used for residential purposes and not located at street intersections. Instead of paying a building permit fee, the applicant will pay a $25 registration fee. Visit www.lakecountyil.gov/planning or call the Central Permit Facility for more information at 847-377-2600.

PILL COLLECTION and DISPOSAL PROGRAM

VILLAGE OF HAWTHORN WOODS

HAWTHORN WOODS POLICE DEPARTMENT

SAVE A STAR DRUG AWARENESS FOUNDATION

Pill Collection and Disposal Program

The Village of Hawthorn Woods, the Hawthorn Woods Police Department, and Save A Star Drug Awareness Foundation announced that they have partnered together to launch a new pill disposal and collection program to safely dispose of unwanted and unused medications, thus keeping them out of the hands of individuals who might otherwise become victims of prescription drug abuse. "More young people now die each year from prescription drug overdoses than from heroin, methamphetamines, cocaine, and inhalants combined," said Chief of Police Jennifer Paulus. "The problem has reached epidemic proportions and threatens the lives of millions of Americans. Our village, our police department, and Save A Star Drug Awareness Foundation have partnered to battle this epidemic." The secure pill collection unit has been installed in the lobby of the Hawthorn Woods Police Department located at 2 Lagoon Drive and items can be dropped of anonymously for disposal at any time.

The following items are acceptable for disposal: Prescription medications, including controlled substances, all over-the counter medications, medication samples, pet medications vitamins and supplements, medicated ointments, lotions, creams and oils, liquid medication in leak-proof containers, and homeopathic remedies.

Items not acceptable for deposit in the collection unit are: Needles/sharps, syringes with needles, thermometers, IV bags, bloody or infectious waste, personal care products, empty containers and hydrogen peroxide. Save A Star Drug Awareness Foundation was founded by David and Gail Katz and their daughter Melissa following the death of David and Gail's son, Daniel from a prescription drug overdose. Save a Star Drug Awareness Foundation is a registered 501(c)3 public charity, whose mission is to fight the current epidemic of prescription drug abuse that threatens the lives of our nation's youth. Save A Star's programs include direct educational presentations to schools, communities, and private organizations, advertising campaigns, and pill collection and disposal programs. Save A Star has also partnered with the DEA Educational Foundation to create a traveling educational exhibit called the "Rx Factor", designed to reach millions across the country. If you'd like more information about Save A Star Drug Awareness Foundation, visit the website at www.SAVEASTAR.org or call 847-579-1300.
