Those of you that normally use Old McHenry Road know first hand the promised road closure is in full swing.... Please make sure to continue visiting the establishments most impacted by the construction project. Pastor Moritz and the fine folks at St. Matthew are still working hard and looking forward to seeing you. Next door, Bill and his staff at Hawthorn Gardens haven't missed a beat. They're open to help you with all your gardening needs. It may take you a bit longer to get there but it's well worth the trip!

I'm constantly asked "When is the Route 53 extension going to happen?" Below is the latest I have on our continuing effort to do what we can at the County level. County Board Chairman Suzi Schmidt is pushing hard to get traction and move the project forward as soon as possible. As we all know, it's a tremendous uphill battle but one we'll continue to fight for.

Please feel free to forward this newsletter. It's a great way to keep everyone up to date on County news and local events. If you have any comments, suggestions or questions, please call or email me.

Lake County Transportation & Route 53

County Chairman Urges Tollway to Advance
Lake County Transportation Projects

Lake County Board Chairman Suzi Schmidt met with the new Executive Director of the Illinois Tollway, Kristi LaFleur, Tuesday to discuss Lake County transportation issues and request the Tollway give consideration to two key transportation improvement projects:  IL Route 53 and IL Route 120.

Chairman Schmidt emphasized that the Illinois Tollway is the appropriate agency to move these projects forward using the agency's "Context Sensitive Solutions" (CSS) process, which uses an inclusive approach to define the project improvements by involving stakeholders. The  I-355 Tollway project is an example.

Chairman Schmidt said, "Improvements to these roadways will help our economy and improve the quality of life for residents who experience gridlock every day. We have to address Lake County's traffic congestion in order to create and retain jobs. I want to thank Ms. LaFleur for taking the time to meet with me and Lake County staff to learn more about these critical transportation projects."

The "Unified Vision for the Central Lake Thruway" calls for the construction of a Route 120 by-pass from Volo to Grayslake that would be a four-lane boulevard in a wide 300-foot right-of-way. The plan is supported by the entire Lake County legislative delegation, along with 11 mayors, five Lake County Board members, and 12 elected bodies. While this is a State road, Lake County and local communities took the lead in this planning effort and conducted a feasibility study. The result was a strong local consensus.

The Route 53 extension into Lake County is another key project that has broad support. Last April 76% of Lake County voters overwhelming showed their support for extending Route 53 in a non-binding referendum.

In September 2001, IDOT and the State Toll Highway Authority, in their extensive Lake County Transportation Improvement Project (LCTIP), completed a draft report which identified the Route 53 extension as one of two finalist alternatives to decide between. To date, however, the State has not decided which option to pursue.

Additionally, both projects are included in the pending "Go To 2040" Regional Plan for the Chicago Area and they scored the highest in congestion relief and mobility opportunities. The Tollway Board is expected to discuss these projects at an upcoming meeting.

Schmidt added, "I hope the Tollway Board seriously considers moving these projects forward to improve transportation across the region."

Biggest Garage Sale

June 5-6 Yard Sale

 9am to 4pm

 Lions Park in Lake Zurich

Got excess stuff?

Want to buy cheap?

The best place to satisfy either need will be Lions Park in Lake Zurich on Saturday and Sunday, June 5-6. That's when the Lake Zurich Lions Club hosts the World's Biggest Yard Sale in its 3-acre park.

The park will be open for setup to anyone who wants to sell stuff that is taking up space in their home, office, garage or back shed starting at 6 A.M. The park will be open to the public from 9-4.

"$40 for booth space is less than it costs to run newspaper ads for your own garage sale and it provides a lot more visibility," said Lion Jim Lumsden, organizer of the event. "We have more than 100 spaces in the park, so it will be a good one-stop-shopping experience."

To secure selling space in the park, register online at lzlions.org or call Jim Lumsden at 847-691-4187.

Items that are not sold can be donated at the end of the day. Whatever the Lions earn is earmarked for college or vocational school scholarships.
