Property Taxes

We receive calls asking about the County Board's role in Lake County property tax bills.

The Lake County Board does not determine tax bills. Each government body (Villages, Townships, School Districts, etc.) sets its own tax rate, approves its own budget and holds budget hearings. Taxpayers have an opportunity to provide input at these public hearings.

When you make your property tax payment to the Lake County Collector, Lake County government is responsible for only 7% of the bill. That means only 7 cents of every property tax dollar you pay goes to Lake County.

For example, a house with a assessed value of $250,000, $346 of the property tax bill goes to Lake County government. The rest is distributed to more than 200 other taxing districts, with schools getting the largest share. Each taxing body is responsible for their portion of the tax bill.

Unless taxing bodies reduce spending levels, property tax bills will remain at current levels or could possibly increase.

EMERGENCY ALERT WEBSITE

ALERT Lake County Launched as Part of

 National County Government Month

Lake County launched a new emergency alert website at the April County Board meeting. ALERT Lake County was developed to keep residents informed and prepared during an emergency. Knowing what to do during an emergency is an important part of being prepared and may make all the difference when seconds count.

When an emergency strikes in Lake County, this website will be used to keep residents informed about developing conditions and what actions to take to keep themselves and their families safe. Residents and businesses can also learn what to do to prepare before an emergency, learn about emergency response efforts, sign-up for emergency alerts and find related links to emergency and relief organizations.

The launch of ALERT Lake County coincides with National County Government Month (NCGM). Lake County will celebrate NCGM during the month of April to highlight essential county government services and programs that protect and enhance the health, welfare and safety of its residents. The theme for this year's celebration is "Healthy Counties".

DISPOSAL OF MEDICATIONS

North Shore Health Center Joins P2D2 Program of Highland Park

Center Becomes Collection Site for Expired Drugs

The North Shore Health Center of the Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center is now a collection site in Highland Park where residents can dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs in an environmentally safe way. The Health Center has joined P2D2, the Prescription Pill and Drug Disposal Program of Highland Park, which is working to keep prescription drugs out of the water supply and out of the hands of children. Drugs disposed of at this site are collected by the Highland Park Police and incinerated.

The public can drop off prescription drugs in a mail box shaped receptacle in the foyer of the North Shore Health Center, 1840 Green Bay Road in Highland Park, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The following items are acceptable for disposal:

·        Prescription medications (except controlled substances)

·         All over-the-counter medications

·         Medication samples

·         Pet medications

·         Vitamins and supplements

·         Medicated ointments, lotions, creams and oils

·        Liquid medication in leak-proof containers

·         Homeopathic remedies

·         Suppositories

Pills are accepted in any packaging, including glass, plastic containers, baggie (Ziploc) or foil. A permanent marker can be used to mark out personal information. Patrons may also remove labels prior to drop off.

Unacceptable:

·         Needles/sharps

·        Syringes with needles

·         Thermometers

·         Controlled substance prescriptions

·         IV bags

·         Bloody or infectious waste

·         Personal care products

·         Empty containers

·         Hydrogen peroxide

·         Illegal drugs and narcotics

The Highland Park P2D2 Program includes the Police Department, Highland Park High School's Green School Initiative and the SAVE A STAR Drug Awareness Foundation.

The program discourages residents from flushing drugs down the toilet. When drugs are flushed, the chemicals become integrated with the water and most treatment plants are unable to remove such chemicals from the water supply. Fish and wildlife in Lake Michigan are negatively affected by these drugs, showing signs of neurological and physiological damage. Unused portions of drugs in medicine cabinets also pose a danger to children who may accidentally ingest these drugs or to others who may use these drugs for recreational purposes.

FIELDERS STADIUM UPDATE

  Lake County Fielders Stadium

The stadium project, originally planned at Green Bay Road and 9th Street, has moved a half mile south to Zion's prominent NE corner of Green Bay Road and Route 173 to accommodate additional retail and entertainment uses. Construction will start next week on the "ballpark village", which will contain specialty retail shops, a multi-screen movie theater, a year-round restaurant, an outdoor concert stage, and of course, the Lake County Fielders.

The half mile relocation of this project to Route 173 will surely maximize the stadium's accessibility and exposure, and provide enjoyment for generations to follow. We've all waited 20 years for minor league baseball in Lake County, and it will be worth the wait!

In 2-3 weeks we'll have an estimated stadium completion and occupancy date, and we'll know with more certainty whether the stadium construction will be far enough advanced to accommodate the Fielders' scheduled June 11th home opener.

Please call the Fielders front office at 847-731-8000 with any questions you may have. Go to Fielders for more information.
