Weather Alert |
Sunday, February 21, 2010 07:40 a.m. CST
Emergency Management Partners:
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Watch for
significant heavy snowfall for the northeastern Illinois area. The watch is in
effect from this evening (Sunday) through Monday afternoon. A Winter Storm Watch
means that conditions are favorable for the development of specific severe
winter weather conditions in the next 24 hours. The NWS may upgrade the Winter
Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Warning later today, depending on forecast
developments. The text of the most recent NWS Winter Storm Watch is included for
your reference at the bottom of this message.
While forecast models are not completely in agreement regarding the track
or intensity of this storm system, it is nearly certain that we will face
intense snowfall overnight tonight, with accumulations of six to eight inches of
heavy, wet snow likely by mid-morning Monday. Recent trends in forecast model
runs have moved the expected storm track a bit further north and slightly
reduced the amount of snow expected, but we will still likely face substantial
snowfall. The NWS forecast discussion includes indications of the uncertainty of
total amounts of snow, but also mentions that snowfall in excess of twelve
inches could be possible for our area.
The expected intense snowfall overnight and likelihood for more than eight
inches of snow will lead to travel impacts on Monday, particularly during the
morning commute. Pay attention to future weather updates from your local media
and weather information sources, such as the NWS webpage at http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lot/, and use caution
during the storm. Plan accordingly for potential travel impacts by allowing
extra time for trips and making sure you have suitable winter clothing in case
you must spend more time outside than you expect. Because this snow is expected
to be wetter and denser than other recent snowfalls in our area, we encourage
people to use caution when shoveling to avoid overexertion and possible cardiac
problems.
