Senior Citizens Tax Deferral Application Deadline is February 26, 2010

Even though we had great difficulties in receiving the funds from the State of Illinois for the 2008 tax payments, we have been guaranteed that this program will continue.

The Senior Citizens Tax Deferral program is a State of Illinois program that is managed by the County Treasurer's Office.  It is a state loan that actually pays your county property tax at a 6% simple interest rate.

A lien is placed on the property and repayment takes place upon death or sale of the home.  The owner must be a least 65 years old as of June 1st of the tax year claimed and a household income of $50,000.00 or less.  The property cannot be income producing, such as a rental.  You must provide proof of current house insurance and property taxes must be current at the time of application.

Those that have a current mortgage, second mortgage or reverse mortgage, must check with their lending institution to see if they qualify.

A new application is needed each year.

For additional information or questions, please feel free to call our office at 847-377-2323, or check on line at www.lakecountyil.gov/treasurer/propertytaxrelief

Youth Employment Hotline

Summer Youth Employment Hotline Opens February 1st
Even in these tough economic times, Lake County will be putting young people to work this summer. The Lake County Workforce Development Department has received funding from the Lake County Board and from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to continue the Summer Youth Employment Program in 2010.

Interested youth must call the summer youth employment hotline beginning February 1st to add their name to the waiting list. The hotline phone number is 847.377.3443.

There are limited positions available in each community and positions will be granted on a first come, first serve basis. Walk-in or mailed information will also be accepted for waiting list placement at Workforce Development, 1 N. Genesee St., Waukegan.

The 2010 Summer Youth Employment Program is open to Lake County youth ages 14-15 who meet the program's low-income criteria or youth ages 14-21 who have an I.E.P. through school.

Individuals who call the hotline on or after February 1st should leave the following information in order to be considered:
  • Name
  • Telephone Number
  • What city you live in
  • Age
Youth chosen for the program will be contacted beginning late March through May to begin processing paperwork. Please leave only one message on the hotline system. Youth are strongly encouraged to explore all summer employment options available to them.

The Lake County Workforce Development is in the process of securing worksites for our youth who will participate in the 2010 Summer Employment Program. If your agency or organization would be willing to provide meaningful part or full-time work experiences for our youth this summer, please contact Jennifer Everett at 847.377.3447 for more information.
